Larry Thomas and Mike Golubski beat a field of 34 other teams in the San Diego Team Night Series event at El Capitan over the weekend thanks to one of the largest tournament-caught bass to come out of the reservoir. Larry Thomas reported catching the 11.69 pound behemoth on a jig (read this article for more on the jig's knack for catching the kickers). That fish alone would have been enough to put them in second place in the tournament, but Golubski and Thomas complemented that fish by filling out their 3 fish limit for a total of 16.76 pounds to comfortably win by over 4 pounds to claim the $1,500 check.

That's right.....JIGS! There is a pretty good jig bite at El Capitan
right now. The Bass are on the shad big time right now so you may be
asking yourself why are they eating the jig so good? It has long been
known that jig fish are typically quality fish. In a lake full of 13 inch
fish (El Capitan) putting 16 inch fish in the livewell can often win the
tournament. During the Summer, the "jig bite" is often overlooked.

The San Diego Team Open features a unique split field, two lake points format that tests the teams versatility and consistency. Demonstrating that perfectly; Brian Johnson and Randy Sapp used consecutive second place days to claim the overall crown in one of San Diego's most prestigious team tournaments. They scored 198 points out of a possible 200 and topped last year's winning team and day one leaders, Art Bailey and Buck Buckhanan who had 196 points to finish second.

Unknown in much of the West, the El Cajon Ford, San Diego Team Open
typically draws the best bass fishermen in the area, and sometimes even a
few of top pros from some distance away.
And it should.
The format of two lakes, with a split field fishing simultaneously on
a Monday and Tuesday when other public use is virtually non-existent,
allows an 80 boat field the opportunity to use all their skills while
they vie for up to a $6000 top prize on a $400 entry fee.
This year, the event will be held Aug. 9-10 on El Capitan and Lower
Otay, but the latter could be the pivotal spot, according to Tom Lowery
who will be competing again this year. “The bite is very good at El
Cap,” he told me Saturday, while he was prefishing at Otay. “This is
where the tournament is going to be won.”

As the 2003 U.S. Open champion, Ramona’s John Kerr has been to the
top of the mountain in the West. Maybe that’s why he appreciates the
desert venue as well as the effort it takes to compete during the brutal
summers at Lake Mead.
Though he missed the money in this year’s Open, his 30th place finish
was not a total bust. Indeed, there may have been more learned this
year than when he finished on top.
