Seventeen anglers representing their local bass clubs will compete in the 30th annual San Diego Bass Council's Tournament of Champions this weekend at Lake Hodges. Each of the area's local bass clubs are entitled to send their club champion to represent them against the top anglers from the other clubs in this annual two-day slug-fest. There are 19 local bass clubs, but the San Diego Bass Pros did not fish tournaments last year, and Kelly Salmans, the Old Pros' champion will not be able to compete. Bud Brant of the San Diego Bassmasters is the 2009 winner, and will get to defend that crown as he was again the Angler of the Year for the SD Bassmasters last year.

Fishing San Diego Bay is more than just a fun day on the
water. The fish that call San Diego Bay home, the California Spotted
Sand Bass,
can make the day of the young, the old, the beginner, and the seasoned
angler
alike. Commonly known as Spotted Bay Bass, due to their reluctance to
leave the
protected harbor waters, and more affectionately called Spotties, these
little
cousins of the mighty grouper can be found in our bay waters as shallow
as one
foot, and as deep as sixty-five feet.
If you live in San Diego County,
chances
are you have caught one of these feisty little fighters. If not, then
why not?

Lower Otay Reservoir is everything a bass fisherman could
ever want. Not too far from downtown San Diego, and yet with its lush
green
hillsides, and its tulle lined banks, there are times when the lake
seems as tranquil
as a far off resort. Best of all, the Florida Strain Largemouth that
call this (newly
deemed urban) lake home, are biting like no tomorrow.

The Trout bite is steady in lakes 2, 3 and 4. Try rainbow powerbait and
nightcrawlers. Use a short leader 6 to 8 inches and 2 or 4 lb. test
line. Tagged fish are still swimming in the lakes worth cash and
prizes. Catch a Trout 5 lbs. or larger and get entered into the April
1st drawing for the Vizio Flat Screen TV.
The last Trout stock for the Season will arrive this week. 1,000 lbs.
of Sierra Rainbows will be split between lakes 3 and 4.

The
striper bite is officially back with the top fish coming in over 32
pounds. Chicken Liver and Anchovies are producing smaller striper near
the dam and the inlet as well as a few in the East End and some from the
shore at Ramp #2 and the Marina Point. The bigger boys have come in
off of big lures, and trout colors seem to be the ticket. The bass are
also hitting hard as they are moving into the shallows and are getting
aggressive. The bass are hitting worms, both plastic and real. East
End and the South Shore are the best spots, however shore fishermen are
finding them west of Marina Point as well as along points near Ramp #2.

Rainy Weather! Fishing was very good this week if you
wanted a limit but did not care about size. Many quick limits of trout
were taken in both boats and on the shoreline. The best spots were on
the other side of the Lake, and near Jump Off Point. The bass bite is
mostly small ones, the bite should pick up in another week or so as
spawning approaches. The catfish bite was great near Boulder Bay. The
bluegill bite is slow. The water temperature is at 57 degrees.

The trout fishing is the best of the year. Cactus Patch, Eagle Point and
Shadow Cove produced limits. Trolling has been poor but chucking silver
Kastmasters in those spots have also been productive. The bass are
definitely staging. A few are in shallow looking but not on nests.
