The 72 anglers checked at Lake Hodges for the opening week of fishing in 2014 reported catching 46 bass, 28 crappie and 1 channel catfish. Those crappie numbers are a good sign, but the bass fishing got off to a slow start.
Some of the bass that were caught were good ones though. As we reported on Wednesday, Tim Green fishing the opener had 4 fish on his boat for 20 pounds, a 5 pound average.
The water temperature is reported at 58 degrees. The launch ramp conditions are listed as “good/fair” but boaters should use caution when launching. The lake’s water level is 23.5 feet below spill, only 1.5 feet higher than the minimum required for the ramp to be operational.
Hodges is open on a Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday schedule for fishing. The concession is currently closed, so no boat rentals or bait available.
