Channel Catfish

The channel catfish is the most abundant catfish species in the region, being found in essentially every body of freshwater capable of sustaining fish.

They are large, exceeding 40 pounds in weight, but not nearly as large as the blue catfish which are also found here.

The San Diego County record channel catfish weighed 41 pounds and 10 ounces, while the record blue catfish totaled 113 pounds and 5 ounces.

Channel catfish are available year-round in San Diego at most of our local lakes, San Vicente (temporarily closed) and Lower Otay are typically the best producers of larger channel catfish.
