Dixon Lake’s 30th Annual Trout Derby was a huge success over the
Veteran’s Day weekend with lots of BIG FISH caught in the 6 to 8-pound
range. The dates for this year’s derby were November 8 to 11. This
year’s Grand prize winning trout weighed in 7.5 pounds and was caught in
Trout Cove on a power worm.
Top honors for the grand prize goes to
Edward Negron of Imperial Beach. David Escoboga of Fallbrook won the
adult division with a 6.62 pound trout caught in Trout Cove on green
power bait. Roy Beck of Oceanside won the Senior division with a 6.82
pound trout in Trout Cove on yellow power bait. The Youth division was
won by Zach Green of San Diego with a 6.69 pound trout on a night
crawler in Whisker Bay.
Dixon Lake will stock again on November 25, with 1500 pounds of trout
from Chaulk Mound Trout Ranch. The hatchery is located in Bridgeport,
Nebraska, home of the “Tail walkers.” Best choices of baits have been
Rainbow color Power bait, small Crappie jigs, Kastmaster and Thomas
Buoyant lures.
The bass action has slowed down this past week. Early morning or later
afternoon bites have been the norm. Bass anglers are having success with
plastics from the Boat Dock Cove and Whisker Bay. With the recent rain
over the weekend, the catfish bite has turned for the better. Several
anglers report fair to good action in the cove areas with cut mackerel.
Pier #2 remains closed due to construction until further notice.
