Lake Morena Fish Report: 5/5/08 - 5/11/08 PDF Print E-mail
Written by Senior Park Ranger, Kevin Benson

Trout – Plenty of trout are still being taken, but the action has slowed some.  Most trout being caught are pulled in using powerbait and crawlers.

Bass – Bass fishing has picked up with the bass holding to shore.  Darker color plastics are your best bet.  Some larger fish are being caught, but fishermen are keeping their cards close to the vest.

Bluegills - A few being caught among the crappie.

Crappie – Crappie bite is on.  Most caught using jigs, run through the rainbow until you find one that works.

Catfish - Some catfish being caught.  Mostly off of powerbait and a few off of mackerel.

NOTE - No open flames allowed during ‘Red Flag Warnings’

Be sure to bring your catch into the Ranger Station to weigh and record your fish. This helps park staff keep track of the fish population and you may also get your name in the local paper! The maximum creel limit for trout, bass or catfish is five fish per person. Limits for crappie and bluegill are 25 per angler. There is no ‘catch and release’ of trout. Bass must be at least 12” long to keep.

The lake is open daily for fishing and boating.  Park hours for fishing and day use are ½ hour before sunrise to ½ hour after sunset.  No swimming at Lake Morena Park.  Motorboats and rowboats are available for rent Wednesdays thru Sundays.  Motorboats rent for $35.  Rowboats rent for $15.00. (Must have own motor)  Our boat ramp will accommodate vessels up to 18’ long.  Watch out for submerged rocks!

For daily fishing updates, call Lake Morena’s recorded fishing line at (619) 478-5473.  A valid California Fishing License is required (not sold at the park), in addition to the lake’s daily Fishing permit available at the Lake Morena Ranger Station.
