Tom Buckalew and Brett De Long (Team Quantum) took home first place
honors for the third annual San Diego Saltwater Bass Showdown finals
held on San Diego Bay last Sunday. The format of the finals was unique
in that all the 15 teams were sent out to catch one of each species of
bass they had been fishing for all season in the qualifying tournament
rounds. During the qualifying tournaments, the teams fished for spotted
bay bass in Mission Bay, sand bass off Oceanside Harbor, spotted bay
bass in south San Diego Bay and Calico Bass in San Diego Bay and
offshore. Now for the finals, their last challenge was to bring to the
scales one of each of the three species of fish they have been fishing
for all season.
Tom and Brett were the most successful team in doing this by bringing
to the scales one spotted bass weighing 2.10 pounds, one sand bass that
weighted in at 5.34 pounds and a calico bass that tipped the scales at
3.06 pounds. The teams sand bass was the largest sand bass of the
tournament and was caught on the "jerkbait" in the mantel of the kelp
forest off of Point Loma. The team picked up $695 for they effort.
Second Place went to lure manufacturer Mike Ryba and Kyle Eady with a 3
fish limit what weighed in at 10.22 pounds. The team also caught the
three bass limit and caught the largest Calico bass of the tournament
on the Reebs Kelp Assassin lure off of Point Loma kelp. Second place
was worth $595.
Third place sent to Bill Schaefer and Brandon Cotton with a three fish limit that weighed in at 9.52 pounds for $220.
Matt Kim fishing from a kayak picked up the largest spotted bay bass of
the contest pitching a swimbait against the pillions in the Shelter
Island harbor area that weighed 2.53 pounds. That one fish earned Matt
$180 and a 6th place finish overall.
