The second stop for the 2008 San Diego Saltwater Bass Showdown was
Oceanside Harbor this past Saturday May 10, 2008. 21 teams from both
San Diego and Orange County fished the event with many teams coming out
from the Saltwater Bass Anglers circuit using the event for a tune-up
for their tournament the following weekend.
Launching out of
Oceanside Harbor, Showdown fishermen found the local inshore waters
teaming with life. Not only were the catches of calico and sand bass
plentiful, but teams reported other incidental special fish like 12 to
14 pound Bonita, 30” long ling cods and keeper California Halibut.
Though the fishing seemed to be wide open, each teams was commissioned
to bring to the scales their five best calico and or sand bass. Here’s
how the day’s fishing went.
First place was pulled in by Matt
Kobzeff and Scott Pethtel with a 5 bass limit that weighed-in at 15.78.
The team’s largest calico bass went 2.30 pounds while their largest
sand bass tipped the scales at 4.17 pounds. They caught their fish at
brownish colored swimbaits and were fishing the rock piles and
artificial reefs in 50 to 70 feet of water.
Second place was
captured by Francis Wong and Roy Fukushima with a combined weight of
sand and Calico bass that went 14.72 pounds.
Largest San bass
honors of the tournament went to the team of Jimmy Linville and Kale
Luis while the heaviest Calico bass award went to Doug Bury and Eugene
Robert with a 4.18 pound kicker. The big irony of the tournament…the
sand bass ruled.
