Congrats Scott. I know you were looking for that one. You should apply for the record. Let me know if you need help on it.

BTW water was 68 degrees out on La Jolla on Saturday. My biggest bass was about 16 to 17 inches, but pulled the fly on a bigger one.

Thanks y’all. I do not plan on submitting this fish to the IGFA. To me it’s not big enough for world record status. I think a WR should be very difficult to obtain. Contrary to what the local saltwater bass pro clown posse* might tell you, 5lb calicos are not hard to come by. I had read the rules and was fishing under IGFA flyrod guidelines looking for the record, but I would want a much bigger one before I would submit it. If I ever get a big one on the flyrod, I will go through the proper process.

This is my flyrod calico PB. It was super fun to catch! I’m very happy about it. I will hang the photo on the wall and blab about it for a while.

A friend of mine has asked to write a full report and tell the story of the whole day leading up to the catch for his new fly fishing website (coming soon). I will do that, and when I do I will post it here as too.

Scott, what will be your standard for an IGFA submission on 10 kg tippet? 6 lbs, 7 lbs?, 8 lbs?, 9 lbs?, 10 lbs? I know plenty of people have caught 7s and 8s on the fly gear, including fish off the Long Beach Breakwall which is arguably a much harder catch than in the salad.

I thought about you all day. When I invited you I told you we might break the WR today. LOL.

Yes, he was hiding under the canopy, but I was fully prepared for and fishing with the intent of pulling a toad out of the leaves. Every aspect was planned, it was no accident. As you surely know, it is very hard to net your own fish with a flyrod. I LOVE the bendo of a big bass on the flyrod! It's like a complete 9' long half circle wiggling on one end.

I caught two others on the flyrod a 1.5 and a 3.7 lber. I got about 20 on TJWs.

How many trips do you make per year on one of the local sportfishing boats?
