Going into Sunday's season finale in the American Bass Association San Diego Region, John Kerr and Buck Buckhanan knew the pressure was on them to have a great finish. Without the help of the teams behind them stumbling, they needed a second or better to take matters into their own hands. They sat only two points ahead of second-place Cameron Smith and Chuck Lavigne.
Targetting schooling-fish in Harvey Arm at Chula Vista's Lower Otay, Kerr and Buckhanan caught 18.2 pounds of bass to finish right there in second and collect their 4th American Bass Association Angler of the Year crown in the last 5 seasons.
Larry Snow and Aaron Johnson won the tournament with 18.65 pounds, with the big fish of the tournament at 6.66 pounds.
Kerr and Buckhanan will be honored with their Angler of the Year awards at the 2009 American Bass Association South Team Classic at Lake Mead on October 2nd and 3rd.
John Kerr has now won 13 Angler of the Year awards through American Bass Association, WON Bass, National Bass West, and the Aim Marine Sunday Series since 2002, making him clearly the most "decorated" tournament fisherman in San Diego during that time.
