rush-otay-bass.jpgLower Otay Reservoir is everything a bass fisherman could ever want. Not too far from downtown San Diego, and yet with its lush green hillsides, and its tulle lined banks, there are times when the lake seems as tranquil as a far off resort. Best of all, the Florida Strain Largemouth that call this (newly deemed urban) lake home, are biting like no tomorrow.

650_4a7392c67a67e.jpgSpirituality can be a contentious word leading to controversial discussion when written or spoken in a public forum...thus the reason I put fishing first. I'm just a normal guy who leads a normal life, and I love to fish. Though I have not been fishing long, I've learned a lot of things about myself (and others) out on the water. Like many of you, most of my immediate circle of people know and for the most part support my passion of fishing.

robert-morin-11.75-casitas.jpgThe more I fish, the more I don't want to just catch a fish, but the more I want to know when, where, and why I caught that fish. Sometimes I don't even care if I catch a fish at all, just as long as I have learned a new technique, or conquered another hurdle. It's all about the challenge. It's not that I am picky; it's that I still haven't learned it all. In fact, the stuff about fishing that I don't know far out weighs the stuff that I do know. I think it always will. That doesn't stop me from wanting to learn, it encourages me.

Amanda Nelson Fish Cartoon.jpgI picked up my guitar for the first time in weeks, yesterday. It wasn’t in my hands long, but I still got to play a bit, and reminisce. There was a time when it was rarely out of my hands. There was a time when I was gonna rock the world. Those times have gone, and so has the desire to look back and wonder. Call it faith. Call it moving on. It just doesn’t matter what it’s called. The question remains, how am I going to tie this into fishing?

Wayne-2-Bass.jpgSeveral years ago, I remember an interview with Kevin Van Dam where he explained his biggest fear in tournaments is coming to the trailer feeling he left a thought on the water. He elaborated on that by saying that when he is fishing a spot and / or a technique, and he gets a thought to try something else, he does it. He does not second guess himself. Even if it means retying, or pulling the trolling motor up and running, he does it, right then and there. He stated that too many times in his early years of tournament fishing, he would talk himself out of that thought, and find the top finishers were the ones that did exactly what he thought about, but did not do. We really have to trust our instincts.

losangelesriver.jpgMy dad used to always say that the one thing in common between bridges and skyscrapers is that they are both made by the lowest bidder. As I am watching the Daytona 500, I am thinking racetracks must also be made by the lowest bidder. It is amazing to see the famed NASCAR race going through multiple restarts due to a pesky pothole. Of course there are elements of climate to consider. Daytona, and Florida in general, has been going through a lot of heavy rain and cold weather. This brings me to the second topic at hand.

Vail-WWT.jpgThere is a silent demon, or perhaps a demon of silence that surrounds us all on our water ways. It is commonly seen when two different boats want the same spot, and rather than having polite conversation, we quite often have angst and guile. Then later, we tell our friends about some “jerk” that muscled us off our spot. Or, the “knuckle head” that anchored right on top of the good stuff.

Chatter-Bass.jpgI don’t remember where it came from originally, but earlier this week, I found a piece of paper with these words written on them: Perseverance is being willing to be unhappy for awhile. Although the words were in my handwriting, I am not sure I can take credit for writing them. I Googled it and came up empty, but that’s not exactly what I mean. Some of you got that. As for the rest, yes, here I go again.

MB-Spotty-1.jpgSome time ago, I was approached by a few different sources to provide them with some essays, articles, and blogs, about what else … fishing. Once upon a time in history, okay ancient history, I did actually study writing. So, I figured I could take on the challenge. Provided of course I could approach it my way. One of the disciplines of journalism that is not one of my strengths however, is journaling. I know, just like irony, huh?
