Archie and Amber After.jpgI am learning with each day's passing that God has a way of fitting just enough time in the day for me to do what needs to be done. I haven't always seen it that way, but it is becoming more and more evident at the turn of each twenty-four hour period. In the past, I would go to bed each night thinking that I have a lot of stuff to do tomorrow, and that kind of anxiety would keep me from getting the sleep I needed to make the next day possible. It was a vicious circle. You don't sleep; you don't perform, you don't perform; you don't sleep.

darrencalicopreview.jpgIt never ceases to amaze me just how small this world can be. There are many people we will never meet, and yet we all have only a slight degree of separation from them and the folks we see everyday. So you can only imagine how stupefied I was when I took out Darren, only to find out that he had been on my boat once before... before it was mine... that is.

Such a great bay to grow up with Print E-mail

cindyspottypreview.jpgAs a fishing guide in San Diego, it is quite often assumed that I am just a bay guide. True, I did grow up on San Diego Bay, and actually watched the making of Seaport Village. At that time, my brother and I often rode our bikes from our North Park home to Ferrer's Surplus, across from the old police station. We would buy a one pound bag of frozen anchovies for about a buck, and off we went to G Street Pier.

jason_el_cap_bass.jpgIt's amazing what thoughts pop through a person's head while fishing. I was recently watching a T.V. show with Scottish comedian/actor/musician Billy Connolly. He was fly-fishing in Canada. He mentioned how people ask him if he comes up with his material while fishing - if that is where he thinks stuff up. He stated that the joy he finds in fishing is that it allows him not to think of anything else. He only thinks of fishing when he is fishing, and that is what he likes about it. I have to say, I feel that way some of the time - mostly during tournaments, and on guide trips. Any other time however, I can easily let my mind wonder. Depending on how you feel about my round about ways of getting to the fish report part of these blog thingies, maybe it's a good thing I let my mind wonder. After all, I am no Billy Connolly.

leopard-2.jpgBeing a Fishing Guide in San Diego, has its challenges. The biggest of all challenges a fishing guide could face is fishing on target. Fishing San Diego offers a lot of fish to catch. So when a client comes to San Diego, and wants to catch a fish that is one of the most nomadic our waters have to offer, the fishing guide can find him/herself after a moving target that can be hard to pin down. That is exactly what happened to this San Diego fishing guide when Michel came from the Netherlands to fish with me. Okay, Michel's boss wants to believe he was here for another reason, but between all of us, it was the great fishing that San Diego Bay has to offer, more specifically - Leopard Shark fishing.

josh-bent-rod.jpgGrowing up in San Diego, it can be challenging to stick to one species of fish for our fishing adventures. We have big bass in our lakes, willing pelagic fish offshore, and a plethora of fishes and critters in between. I don't know about you, but quite frankly, I find it almost boring to not get out there and try something new.

Kevin-Big-Spotty.jpgFishing San Diego Bay is more than just a fun day on the water. The fish that call San Diego Bay home, the California Spotted Sand Bass, can make the day of the young, the old, the beginner, and the seasoned angler alike. Commonly known as Spotted Bay Bass, due to their reluctance to leave the protected harbor waters, and more affectionately called Spotties, these little cousins of the mighty grouper can be found in our bay waters as shallow as one foot, and as deep as sixty-five feet.

If you live in San Diego County, chances are you have caught one of these feisty little fighters. If not, then why not?
