Baitfish key to Dean Rojas’ Lake Murray action Print E-mail

test-double-a1-300x199.jpgI confess, there was a 20-year gap between trips to San Diego’s Lake Murray, but it’s good to know the little pond is still worth the trip. Instead of just a scenic photo-shoot with Bassmaster Elite pro Dean Rojas and his long-time friend Kelly Salmans, we caught enough fish to seriously consider a return trip.

We never found the 58-degree water advertised yesterday, but 55 to 57 showed lake wide and the shad were generally in open water, 10 to 20 feet below the surface. When Dean stuck the first,  he couldn’t contain himself, smacking us for his use of pale green reaper fished on a Carolina rig. It turned out this was the area (the west side of Del Cerro Bay toward the buoy line) is where we should have spent more time.

El Capitan had the best bass bite reported, with most of the fish being taken from the North End of the lake. Bass are busting on shad throughout most of the lake, with the most consistent action in the North End. Sutherland and Barrett are closed for the season, while San Vicente remains closed for the dam raise project.

The City of San Diego's Fish Catch updated for week ending September 27, 2009. El Capitan and Lower Otay remain the best options for bass fishing. Sutherland is now closed for fishing until March of 2010.

gabebolivarelcap.jpgAs advertised, there were breaking fish in open water at the north end of El Capitan, Thursday. But what wasn’t there was the intensity. Still, days before he was to head to Lake Mead and the U.S. Open, Gabe Bolivar of Oceanside used a full array of tackle to catch keepers.
