Larry Thomas and Mike Golubski beat a field of 34 other teams in the San Diego Team Night Series event at El Capitan over the weekend thanks to one of the largest tournament-caught bass to come out of the reservoir. Larry Thomas reported catching the 11.69 pound behemoth on a jig (read this article for more on the jig's knack for catching the kickers). That fish alone would have been enough to put them in second place in the tournament, but Golubski and Thomas complemented that fish by filling out their 3 fish limit for a total of 16.76 pounds to comfortably win by over 4 pounds to claim the $1,500 check.

The San Diego Team Night Series will unveil its new reduced entry fee this Saturday night at El Capitan. The new $175 entry fee (from $300) per team will be in effect for the final two tournaments of the series starting Saturday, August 28th. The new rate makes it extremely enticing for teams of all competitive levels, giving even the novice anglers a rare opportunity to fish on El Capitan (and Otay on September 25th) at night.

The San Diego Team Open features a unique split field, two lake points format that tests the teams versatility and consistency. Demonstrating that perfectly; Brian Johnson and Randy Sapp used consecutive second place days to claim the overall crown in one of San Diego's most prestigious team tournaments. They scored 198 points out of a possible 200 and topped last year's winning team and day one leaders, Art Bailey and Buck Buckhanan who had 196 points to finish second.

The 12th annual El Cajon Ford San Diego Team Open got underway today with a split field format at both El Capitan and Lower Otay. Points are awarded (100 to 1st, 99 to second and so on) each day, and the team with the most points after the two days (one day at each lake) will take home the guaranteed $6,000 first place prize. Jim Sleight and Ron Overman weighed in 13 pounds even with the big bass of the tournament so far at 5.37 pounds to collect 100 points at El Capitan. At Otay, Art Bailey of Anglers Marine and Buck Buckhanan weighed 12.18 pounds to top their group and earn 100 points.

Unknown in much of the West, the El Cajon Ford, San Diego Team Open
typically draws the best bass fishermen in the area, and sometimes even a
few of top pros from some distance away.
And it should.
The format of two lakes, with a split field fishing simultaneously on
a Monday and Tuesday when other public use is virtually non-existent,
allows an 80 boat field the opportunity to use all their skills while
they vie for up to a $6000 top prize on a $400 entry fee.
This year, the event will be held Aug. 9-10 on El Capitan and Lower
Otay, but the latter could be the pivotal spot, according to Tom Lowery
who will be competing again this year. “The bite is very good at El
Cap,” he told me Saturday, while he was prefishing at Otay. “This is
where the tournament is going to be won.”

Due to the high water levels at Lake El Capitan, the main parking lot is
under water which has left the lake with limited parking. Therefore,
the City Lakes Department has asked us to stage all boats and
participants at this upcoming tournament below the dam. In order to get
to this area you will need to make a left after entering the main gate.
There will be signs posted for you to follow. Please do not park on the
road, keeping going to the end of the road where we will check-in all
fisherman. After you check-in and your boat is inspected you will need
to wait at the bottom.

Thursday, May 13, 2010 |
The San Diego Council of Bass Clubs has announced a re-launch of their long-standing, but recently canceled Kevin Mineo Memorial Tournament Series. With tournament participation dropping below self-sustaining level, the Council made the tough decision to cancel the night series just three weeks ago. In its place, the Council has announced a series of Sunday daytime tournaments bearing the Kevin Mineo Memorial Tournament Series title. The new tournament series bears a resemblance to the successful former Aim Marine Sunday Series with a format offering a bonus pay-out ($100) for the top "guy/gal" and "adult/child" (children ages 8-17 are eligible) teams in the tournament.

Tuesday, April 27, 2010 |
Tom Lowery and Dennis Kolender teamed up to beat 29 other teams in Saturday's National Bass West team tournament at El Capitan. The tournament was Dennis' first since his recent move back to San Diego. Dennis has lived the last several years in the Las Vegas / Henderson, NV area pursuing a professional fishing career based on the expansive Lake Mead which is home to several pro tournaments each year, including the US Open. Tom welcomed his old buddy back to San Diego tournament fishing with a giant El Capitan bass weighing 10.90 pounds. That bass alone would have earned them a top 3 finish, but they complemented the big sow with four other keepers to give them a limit weighing 17.10 pounds.
