Tom Leedom and Brian Kowalski had a firm grasp on the National Bass West 2009 Angler of the Year title going into the series' final tournament at Lake Hodges. What little opportunity defending champions John and Jordan Kerr had to steal the title was removed when Leedom and Kowalski weighed in the tournament's biggest bag. Their 11.30 pound limit was the only result over 10 pounds out of the 33 team field.

Escondido's Lake Hodges continues to take the brunt of both casual and tournament fisherman, continuing to produce quality bass day and night. The National Bass West Series, arguably San Diego's most competitive field, will get their first crack at Hodges Saturday, May 9th. And despite the consistent pressure the lake has received lately, anglers have reason to be optimistic about the chance to catch a double-digit fish Saturday.
Tournament angler, Mike McLernon proved last Wednesday that big fish are still available for the taking (photo shown to the right, approximate 11 pound fish). McLernon, and tournament partner Jeff Wilkey currently sit in 6th place in the year-to-date standings, 26 points off leaders Tom Leedom and Brian Kowalski.

Despite not having one of the tournament's three biggest bass, the duo still walked away with $2,875 for their efforts on the day. They reported catching their fish on plastics on the flats in Harvey Arm.

National Bass West goes 100% Due to the recent and tragic economic
crisis that we Americans are experiencing, National Bass West has made
a very tough decision. Noting that we have had great success with our
guaranteed payout, we cannot take the risk of guaranteeing a payback
based on 50 teams participating. We have decided to have a 100% payback
instead of the guaranteed payout.
