The San Diego Council of Bass Clubs has announced a re-launch of their long-standing, but recently canceled Kevin Mineo Memorial Tournament Series. With tournament participation dropping below self-sustaining level, the Council made the tough decision to cancel the night series just three weeks ago. In its place, the Council has announced a series of Sunday daytime tournaments bearing the Kevin Mineo Memorial Tournament Series title. The new tournament series bears a resemblance to the successful former Aim Marine Sunday Series with a format offering a bonus pay-out ($100) for the top "guy/gal" and "adult/child" (children ages 8-17 are eligible) teams in the tournament.

Seventeen anglers representing their local bass clubs will compete in the 30th annual San Diego Bass Council's Tournament of Champions this weekend at Lake Hodges. Each of the area's local bass clubs are entitled to send their club champion to represent them against the top anglers from the other clubs in this annual two-day slug-fest. There are 19 local bass clubs, but the San Diego Bass Pros did not fish tournaments last year, and Kelly Salmans, the Old Pros' champion will not be able to compete. Bud Brant of the San Diego Bassmasters is the 2009 winner, and will get to defend that crown as he was again the Angler of the Year for the SD Bassmasters last year.

Scott Wingo and Trevor Dawson brought 11.95 pounds to the scales early Sunday morning to win the San Diego Bass Council's Kevin Mineo Memorial season finale at El Capitan. They made it a clean sweep, capturing first place in the tournament, the tournament's biggest bass (4.91 pounds) and sealing the deal on the series as the champions of the points standings. They entered the tournament with a 19 point lead, and with 21 entrants in the final tournament they had already all but wrapped it up just by showing up. Catching just a small limit would have likely been enough, but far less glamorous (and financially lucrative, they earned $1,282 for first w/ big fish) than going out with a win as they did.

The sixth and final Kevin Mineo Memorial Night Tournament will take place this Saturday night at El Capitan. It is not too late to participate in the fun, teams can sign up with tournament director Tim Witucky at the lake prior to the start of the tournament. You do not need to be a member of a bass club to fish these events, which help raise money to maintain the Bass Fishing Hall of Fame exhibit at the San Diego Hall of Champions in Balboa Park.

The San Diego Council of Bass Clubs is hosting their 5th tournament in the 2009 Kevin Mineo Memorial Night Tournament Series this Saturday night at El Capitan. With the warm weather we have been having coupled with the mild nights and bright moon, the conditions should be optimal for a fun night of fish catching. And because this event falls on Labor Day Weekend, many anglers will have an extra day to rest on Monday to get ready for the grind of the work week.
