  • This year will be remembered for generations for the giant bluefin tuna which were available in local waters, hundreds of fish over 200 pounds have been caught — but none bigger than the 262 pounder caught on Friday, July 8th 20 miles off the coast of Oceanside.

Greg Commentz, fishing with his buddies Josh Wootton and Cliff Marsh, aboard Greg’s boat “Sales Meeting” landed the massive “cow” against tall odds after hooking the fish on a popper and long rod.

The state record, according to the CDFW, is 243 pounds. But because all 3 anglers took turns pulling on the rod during the fight, this fish will not count as a new record.

The hookup, fight, and landing were caught on GoPro, which Greg has since posted in raw form on YouTube. The thing that makes popper fishing so alluring is the exhilarating topwater strikes they draw.

That’s evidenced vividly with this fish, at about the 1:53 mark of the first video, when it explodes on the popper right off the bow of the boat.

    A continuation of the fight…

The final chapter of the battle…

    And the fish on deck…
