#10 – River2Sea Whopper Plopper
The River2Sea Whopper Plopper was designed by Larry Dahlberg, a former smallmouth bass fishing guide turned legendary TV personality and lure creator. Dahlberg is known for his attention to detail, and his interest in creating his own fish catching tools – both of which came into play with the Whopper Plopper.
This topwater lure comes in two models; the 90 which is 3.5″ in length and the 130 at 5″. Both sizes are available in a variety of colors, including shad, bone, and rainbow trout – all of which are apt to work extraordinarily well in San Diego.
The Whopper Plopper shines for several reasons; it casts easily, works at a variety of speeds, has a consistent action out of the package, and has a unique sound and action that set it apart from other baits that fish in highly pressured reservoirs like ours are already accustomed to.
Think of this bait as a buzzbait with a more realistic profile and slightly different action. With its tandem treble hooks, its not going to come through vegetation quite as well as a buzzbait, but will excel in shallow water when bass are keying in on bait fish in warmer months of the year.
