The San Diego Anglers are still accepting entry forms for their 16th annual San Diego Open Bay Bass Tournament coming up on Saturday, January 29th. The popular annual tournament pits well over 100 teams (of two) of anglers against eachother in a battle of bassin on the big bay. The team with the heaviest stringer of 5 bass, made up of any combination (or all one species) of calico bass, barred sand bass, or spotted bay bass wins the hefty 1st place prize of $1,500 cash, plus the optional jackpot money should they be entered in the option. Last year’s champions; arguably the best bay anglers in Southern California, Dennis Burlason and Ed Howerton took home $3,725 from the purse and jackpot pool for having the largest halibut as well.
Brian Johnson and Art Bailey of Anglers Marine in Santee beat 55 other teams at “the Jewel” on Saturday in National Bass West’s 2nd DVL tournament of the year. Bailey pulled even in another race, albeit an unofficial one. His boss, Anglers Marine owner Rick Grover, partnered with his son Kyle won the first tournament of the year on November 7th. Johnson and Bailey brought 25.94 pounds of largemouth to the scale to beat a very competitive team tournament field on the hottest lake in Southern California.
A tournament aptly named the “Jim Edwards Benefit Tournament” has been scheduled for December 4th, 2010 to raise funds for mounting medical costs to long-time San Diego angler Jim Edwards. Jim has been battling numerous complications from a badly broken leg that has already required several surgeries.
