It’s common knowledge that sharks regularly make meals out of sea lions, but apparently the roles can be reversed as well.
A photographer aboard a whale watching charter out of Newport Beach captured photos and video of a series of events a few days ago in which sea lions were actively hunting, killing and devouring young thresher sharks off the southern California coast.
The photographer, Slater Moore posted the photos and video on his Facebook page last Wednesday. The video’s description says this action took place 1 mile from Newport Harbor, which is about 90 miles north of San Diego.
The photos show the action in even greater detail. Clearly these were young thresher sharks, and much smaller than the sea lions which were hunting them. But still, this is proof that predatory sharks aren’t always at the top of the food chain.
