Tides weren't really what I wanted in the afternoons this week, decided to switch it up and fish mission jetty today.
Got a line in around 2pm and fished till dusk. Shrimp on the bottom was the gameplan. Hoping for opaleye, sheep, sculpin ect. Fished a few spots on the way out to the house, no bites. Found a pocket on the channel side where I got repeatedly thieved and had one nice pull but no hookup. Gave a try just past the surf line, current was pushing lots of salad against the jetty from the north.
Went back to the channel side and finally stuck a few. Nothing too exciting, 5 dinky calicos and a black surf perch. Lots of nibbles and thieving going on. At sunset moved back to fishing the surf side, hooked up a pretty beastly sargo and upon attempting to hoist it out of the water to hand, dumped it into a crevice in the rocks at the water, played tug of war for a while but couldn't pull it free and wasnt going to climb down those wet surf rocks. Snapped em off against the rocks, looked like a nice fish but so it goes sometimes. Nice sunset and fresh air and a handful of little guys landed. Could be worse..

Sargo have probably broke my heart on the jetty more than any other fish. 18 inch sheep and beans? No problem. But one 14" sargo comes along and my line snaps as I lift it out of the water.

I'm too stubborn to admit to Daniel that he might be right about dropper loops... at least in regards to sargo.

He was at the edge of the rocks and a big wave was about to smash so I just went for it and tossed him up. Saw it on the rocks in front of me then he went back in. Maybe could have waited it out in freespool but the sun was down and I didnt wanna make that walk back in the dark with no headlamp. Right before I made that cast I thought to myself "this is gunna be a tough deal if I hook a solid fish here" hahaha.

I've had better luck with the Werfless spider hitch than a dropper loop. If I snag my hook I can bend it out and loop on a new one, the knot holds on 15#.

Nice work bud. Jetty is black hole sometimes. Good on you for finding some method of fishing to put to use. Tides haven’t been working well with my time slots to hit the surf. Itching to get out. If you’re available Saturday or Sunday morning shoot me a text. Perch have been on the chew in your neck of the woods.

I've been mostly fishing afternoon till dusk lately. Tides look good for that this week. Always down to whack bass in the dark as well
