WHAT A WONDERFUL NIGHT OF SURF FISHING!

We headed out to Scripps Pier and decided to catch some incoming tide Barred Surf Perch.

Myself with a setup of 7'6" 50# spectra bimini knot to 10# mono
1st Friend with a setup of 7' 50# spectra uni to uni knot to 10# mono
2nd Friend with a setup of a 9' 65# spectra uni to uni knot to 30# mono

I had a blast catching barred surf perch over 10+ inches! My friends did not know the secret how to catch perch.. So I told them the secret many times and did not listen, therefore they only caught 1 perch each :S

It was a blast watching my two friends getting wet! How the water gets inside their boots was hilarious, I wish I could had recorded it!

I have caught 12 surf perch tonight, while my 1# friend caught 1 perch, and 2# friend caught 1 perch. I gotta say that regular shrimp as bait worked fine, squid was not working.

Well I decided to keep 6 small perch only, I released the big pregnant ones. I have not fished for these species since last year around July.. And I have no lunch for tomorrow :cheer:

I would love to go surf fishing in a while from now, I missed their action of fighting.. Just feels like a calico bass!

Well here are the pics; enjoy! I will post a picture of them fried !!

    Re:1/29/09 Perch gone wild!!

    nice pics. Thanks for sharing.

    Here's my secret:

using marine invertebrates for bait on either side of the pier is illegal. Shrimp, clams, bloodworms, sand crabs, mussels, all illegal. not supposed to collect, harvest, keep, possess..nyet. I guess if you could prove that your shrimp were freshwater shrimp.....

can't find the link that explains it....but there's a hint on page 68 of the saltwater regs.

there SHOULD be a better explanation somewhere on line..and I can't find it now...and it would be a shame to get busted for breaking a rule that's impossible to find...but you been warned, homie.

    Re:1/29/09 Perch gone wild!!

Haha If I cannot use regular shrimp at near Scripps Pier then, I got other beaches to go and slay the bigger surf perch.

I could not find any "helpful" information.. About bait selection. Page 67 or 68 does not explain if I can use regular shrimp at all, I believe its intending that its prohibited to pump ghost shrimps or take sand crabs.

I find gulp camo worms crap, I love to use 2" perch grubs they slay the big ones before sunset at my other spot :cheer:

    Top of page 67.

The area around Scripps pier is the San Diego-Scripps State Marine Conservation area. It’s called other stuff on various maps.

The “species prohibited for recreational takeâ€

I love Gulp worms, these were taken with camo worms from Mission bay, it was a blast because the spotfin were very aggressive and jumped on the Gulps hard
so I guess to each their own

    Hey Mr. justice...
I'm new to bay fishing...What technique did you use with the Gulp worms?
I may take my boys out on the bay soon.

I used an ultralight, 4lb test and a carolina rig to drift the deeper part of the channel under the bridge between Crown Point and Sail bay I think they call it Fisherman's channel. There is a sweet spot from about a hundered yards west of the bridge through the center to about a hundered yards east. It ranges to about 13'-16' deep depending on tides just keep your worms drifting just off the bottom. I uses two to three worms each on a small mosquito hook.
