I don't usually cut the sting rays tail off. They don't bug me when I catch one or two, but when I reach the double digit mark, I get frustrated. You're right, it's not right to cutoff their tails and make them a defenseless flying saucer. I'm just curious what they would be defenseless from. What fish/bird eats stingray?

No they have Tigers over there... leopards would probably be considered bait...

    Oh

Sharks. I’ve seen leopard sharks eat round rays.. I know soupfins will eat them too. The only thing that eats bat rays are orcas and juice great whites given the opportunity.

Any fish that you catch and kill is part of your bag limit and has to be a legal fish. Just because you use the fish for chum instead of eating it doesn't mean that it wasn't caught and killed. I'm sure the wardens wouldn't be happy if I kept a BSB but used it as shark bait instead of eating it.

Sharks, rays, etc, I dunno what the big deal is.. Cut up and chum ten rays every single day.. Zero difference in hookups the next day.. Do it 70 days in a row and I bet the donkeys show up..

It's also interesting to think about how a lot of the natural predators of stingrays are unfazed by their spines. I know that lots of Hammerheads are caught on the east coast with numerous stingray spines lodged in their throats, and I pulled what looked like a bat ray spine out of a sevengill I caught last month. It would be interesting to study the effects that spine removal have on the long-term survival of these animals.

i wonder if anyone's used the little round rays as live bait for something big?
rays are stubborn little ****ers, so id imagine that if you cut the tail off, put a hook on it, and threw it back in, youd have a lively, active bait thats also releasing blood into the water to attract predators. I'd give it a shot myself, but I only seem to pull up the thornbacks these days
