Went to Squidco, let them talk me into buying whatever they said I needed, headed out to IB Pier because it was too hot and no AC at the pad. My first time doing this, so I just copied what these guys on the pier were doing and stayed out of their way. I didn’t have any weights so I stuck they heaviest thing I had in my car which were tow hooks in the cage haha. My first two!!...but too short. Still have a couple of hours so we’ll see if I get a keeper

Headed back out last night with my pops for 3 hours. 10-12 shortys and some crabs had to swan dive back into the pacific. I did catch a couple tiny croakers and guitarfishes in between drops, so it was still a fun outing.

After 3 outings and 25 straight shorts, I finally was able to forcibly reaccomadate my first one to my kitchen. I swear I’ve been hearing their screeching in my sleep teasing me the last couple of nights

What gear did they talk you in to? Cost? If I am correct, a couple of hoop nets, rope long enough for the pier, gauge, and some bait is what I need.

I've been wanting to get in to this for a while now and set it as one of my new year resolutions.

Just dont forget to pickup a lobster report card and fill it out every time you head out. Even though public piers don't require a fishing license, you still need the report card, and they occasionally check hoop netters for them.
And don't forget to submit the card when the season ends...

This is what I purchased. You also need to have a metal measuring gauge and a report card.

If your going to stuick with that bait cage, I suggest that you get some tie straps for it. Seals can easily break into those cages...

I tried for two seasons with the walmart nets and made my own bait holders from PVC (stupid seals would steal my bait); never did catch a legal size one though. Until a buddy took me out to the channel on his boat that we managed a few keepers. If I do get back into it next season I'll be getting the volcano nets for sure.

I remember saving some yellowtail carcass for bait and shoving them into the bait cage. A few minutes later I see a seal tossing around a fish head...wait is that my yellowtail lobster bait? Son of a!

This season, I’ve abandoned the volcano nets. For the first few weeks of season, I was keeping an accurate tally of lobster for each net type. For my quick experiment, I kept all other variables the same. Meaning, all nets were given the same bait, soak time, etc. I even moved the nets around so that one net type was not given “the good spot” while the other net type was placed in a less productive location. It didn’t matter which pier I was hooping off, nor did it matter what time of day it was, the flat hoop nets out-produced the volcano nets 9-1 in the high end and 4-1 on the low. PaulTheGreat’s post about hoop netting had similar results (5-1). I still can’t pinpoint a reason as to why this happens, but for me, I’m gonna stick to the flat ones. Volcanoes are just as productive for crab funny enough.

Maybe because they sit flat on the floor so its easier for a bug to crawl right on the cage to the bait rather than up and into it?

I went hooping with a guy in SD Bay on our kayaks. Had light sticks on the float so we could find them again. As he was paddling around I couldn't understand why he was paddling right over my float/light stick, and why is he dragging it around - wait a sec... that float/light is moving under and away from him - a seal was dragging the whole net and rope/float/light trying to get to the bait!!!

What style net are you referring to as the volcano? Is that the one where when you pull up on the net the mesh net hangs down in a V shape? Or is it the ambush style net where it has a smaller metal hoop that sits above the bigger hoop on the bottom and when you pull up the trap the smaller hoop springs up? I prefer the latter hoop. For those saying that the smaller hoop is disadvataged, i was able to land a 17+lber in one, just barely, about half in the net, half out. I gotta say luck was on my side for that one. Now to look for the pics cuz i know some of you will ask for the proof in the pudding lol

I had this posted on BD a while back, but got lots of hate from the infamous armchair capts. Mod even had to move the post strangely enuff, but as promised. I even gave it a name just like Homer did with Pinchie, mine was bugzilla, appropriate to saay the least!
