I was riding a 4 session skunk streak, haven't targeted bass in a long time but spent a few sessions chucking plastics in a few spots that used to be money for me with the spotties, but things have changed.
Last night decided to do it the dirty way, and headed down to quivira area with some frozen mackerel. Chummed some bread and caught a couple smelt and put em on the bottom with a dropper loop. Got one nice hit but no hookup, so started fishing mack chunks. Didnt take long to bust the skunk with a feisty spotty. After the sun went down, a rat stole my last half mackerel. Threw a rapala around a bit and caught a salema on it. Chunked the salema out, and got another bass. Crappy pic in the dark, but it was a solid 15" or so. Forgot how hard those things fight, actually took a little drag on 15#. Not a crazy session, but after not landing a fish from shore in a week or so, felt good to pull on a few. Getting chilly at night, winter is coming fast. Tight lines

My coworkers didn't believe me about the rats in mission bay rocks. The rats can get pretty ballsy.

Stays on the hook better than mackerel too. Salema on a rapala is a first for me.

Any tips for catching smelt for live bait? Bobber setup? Got a few but more frustrating than I thought it would be lol

Best method I have found is chum them into a tight ball and rig two #8-12 trebles about a foot apart. Add a small split shot between if needed. Snag away on the smaller ones, or put a small piece of bait on one prong of each if the huge ones are the target...

For real. It was a big mack too, would have been hilarious to see them carrying it away

I use my smallest trout treble hooks with a tiny bit of shrimp. Have a bobber from Walmart that is weighted towards the bottom. I just move the rod up and down down slowly and they usually hook themselves.

I haven’t caught a spottie since early September, it’s getting ridiculous how hard it is to get those little grumps to bite now. I know the bite will pick up soon, I have better luck in the late fall and winter

I’ve seen dudes catch the rats throw a 6/0 hook through their shoulders and cast them out into the bay... not my cup of tea but to each their own
