Was out this past weekend with an SDfish member Ben (not sure his screen name) and his wife and 7 year old. I'm sure by now you've heard of the epic fishing going on in San Diego Bay, but even this surpassed my expectations for our morning Half Day adventure. We left the dock at 7:30 with our sights set south of the bridge. Found a huge area of terns working in a different zone then the past few weeks. We slid in to make a few casts and what happened next was pure pandemonium. Within seconds of our lines entering the water they were all tripled up on Yellowfin Croaker. It was basically a fish/bite a cast for the next 3.5 hours until the marine layer burned off and the bait schools dissipated. At one point Ben had a Yellowfin Croaker on 8 straight cast (A new record on my boat) and finished it off with a 24"+ Corvina on cast 9! Also had 2 Croaker and 1 Corvina at the same time on the Sabiki as I was trying to make a few pieces of bait. Small 3" Zman Slim Swimmerz did the damage and what was most important was sticking with the birds. We chased them a mile down the beach and another mile back out towards the channel. If there weren't terns flying over our head, we weren't getting bit. Yellowfin Croaker in the 1-3lb range made up the bulk of the catch but we also had upwards of 25 Shortfin Corvina to 5lbs, 8 pencil Barracuda, a dozen Spotted Bay Bass, a Queenfish, Smoothhound shark, and a handful of Mackerel. When the dust settled our conservative estimate was well over 100 Yellowfin Croaker with a some 3lb+ Footballs in the mix. The highlight of the day was watching the little man's drag zinging after he pulled in fish after fish. He could barely reel them in by the end of the flurry! Sorry dad, but that's going to be a tough act to follow! They wanted to spend the last hour trying for some bigger sharks so we repurposed our Mackerel and turned them into 3 Shovelnose Sharks, a Bat Ray, and a big pregnant Smoothhound Shark before the time was up. A truly special day on San Diego Bay that we will be chasing for a long time. We are booking trips for June and beyond so now's the time to get out and enjoy the amazing fishing the Bay has been offering up this Spring. Yeah, Ben here, took the family out with Eric for a Saturday morning session. it was unbelievable, I have never experienced anything like it. Eric got us on the fish within 20 minutes of leaving the launch, and it was non-stop all day. It was to the point that it felt odd if you didn't at least get a bump on a cast. I doubt any of us cast more than 5 in a row all day without at least some kind of action. There were 20-30 minute stretches that there was at least a strike every. single. cast. It was that good. Kudos to Eric for a great trip, poor guy was running around the boat as fast as he could trying to unhook / release fish as we were pulling them in. I think he must have been as exhausted as we were after the trip, not sure I have ever seen anyone move so fast, and have definitely not been on a guided trip where the captain was so knowledgeable about the local fish, why they are biting, where, what, etc. I will definitely be booking another trip in the near future. More pics to come.
