Had less than 2 hours yesterday afternoon to get out on the sand and try out a new rod I got.

Water was fairly calm, still very clear. Swell was quite small and minimal veggies.

Swept Army-Navy with a drop-shot grub and bloodworms but got zipped. Zero action.

Headed south to Tamarack, in between the jetties. Also quiet but managed one small bean and one respectable BSP. Was happy to get bit on new gear. Headed home about 4:45.

New rod is a KastKing Krome Steelhead drifting rod. I've never had any of their gear and have a hard time finding reviews that I feel are impartial. But after looking at the specs on this rod, I decided to roll the dice. Very pleasantly surprised at the quality and feel of it. 9'6" MH fast rated 1/2-1oz. Not sure if 8oz is considered heavy for that class but it feels butt-weighted so it didn't seem to fatigue me too rapidly. High modulus graphite blank is very sensitive and I felt the strikes very clearly. Handling small fish was no challenge at all and I can't wait to pull on something a little ebigger. It has a firm tip, but I think it will be able to handle weights from 3/8-1.5 pretty well. It will be great for working swimbaits, spoons and jigs. $150 seems like a high price point for a KastKing product, but I have to say I'm impressed with it so far and seems like money well spent.

    Pic coming.

    DANG! < gulp> LOL!
Some of the few impartial reviews I've seen on YT about KK, hae been blah at best about their reels, but I couldn't find many about their rods, especially the Krome series as its pretty new. I figured: they've got good blanks, Fuji seats and guides; no moving parts, so... I'll let you all know if it seems defective in any way.

Sharky III Baitfeeder still going strong after a year of abuse (2-3 times a month). Surf dunks and rock drops. But then I rinse every session and service when it feels off. Not bad for $45 for the kind of fishing I do. Never tried the rods - am interested in seeing how they perform and last.

    Hi J,
Saturday might head south with my son to try and get on some sharks.
Sunday might do some shore work in North County. HMU if you’re getting out.

Yea I almost got that Krome rod. I love the carbon fiber look. Ultimately It was a little pricy for me at the moment and like you, I didn't see very many reviews yet.

I don't know about their baitcasters but the Sharky III is a very solid reel

Yeah, I didn't really want to spend that much, but was having trouble finding a rod to fit this sweet-spot of 1/2-1.25 oz and fast enough action to work lures/jigs/cranks. Also, with all the materials and tech on it, I got sold on it being value for the money. I really need to catch a few more fish on it to give a good report, but so far, it feels really good working dropshots and jigs. I'm not sure I can say it casts a lot farther than my 8.5 ft Scimitar but I haven't tried anything over 3/4oz yet either.
If I'm headed out this week, I'll PM you. If you're around you can come by and shake it, make a few casts if you want.
    Cheers.

I just picked up their Kapstan baitcaster. It's a 300 size holds nearly 300 yrds of 65 lb power pro and 35 pounds of drag, i need to hook a biggun to test it out. Casts like a dream, centrifugal and magnetic braking, oversized handle I was throwing 3oz straight into a headwind and no birds nest. Minimal thumbing the spool.

Report back on how it performs if you can. I've wondered how their top-tier reels are.

I remember reading that report, and I was going to buy one but got a jigmaster instead. Given the performance of the sharky III, I've wanted to get my hands on some of their "nicer" stuff and see if the value continues upwards in their reels.

I surely will. I've already torn it completely apart to see how good of quality the innards were and I was pleasantly surprised. I'd put this up an 300 size lexan or tranx any day, already have more drag than they do
