After seeing the recent halibut posts, I got the urge to try my luck this afternoon. Went for a 2 hour session throwing LC and various other lures. Around 5:30 pm, it got completely dark and I was about to give up, concluding another skunk session. Then I got a hit, which ended up being my personal best opaleye to date. I thought opaleye were herbivores feeding on seaweed, I had no idea they hit lures, especially the stickbaits. It was almost 14 inches and weighed a hair over 2 pounds. When cleaning I noticed its stomach was full of seaweed, yet it was still greedy enough to go after my lure. opaleye1.jpg opaleye2.jpg opaleye3.jpg

Thanks, frankly I was quite surprised to catch one. When I first got a hit, I thought it would be a short halibut or some small ray. This is the first opaleye I got that's big enough to eat, let's see if it's good eating :)

They get territorial... Wasn't a predatory strike, great catch and good news. Clean thoroughly and fry

Thanks for the insight, it was hooked on the lip not foul hooked or anything, so I assumed it was actually trying to hunt. I had no idea about the territorial thing. I wonder if I return the same area with some shrimp, would I find some of its buddies :)

Perch will actually eat baitfish, though. Not as commonly as they do invertebrates but I've seen a few smelt in their stomachs

I always caught opaleye with mussel , not sure why they would be considered vegetarian. Maybe they shifted over in the 90's?

Oh yeah. Pretty hard to catch them much bigger than 6# or so on bait. Every once in awhile, some spearo will skewer one more than ten pounds

Definitely is, they just have a max size much larger than expected. Think my biggest is around the 6# mark
