I’m just about finished with my Livingston build, so I thought I’d post up the details and what Ive learned along the way.

I was going to keep the boat as a tiller and just build some decks. I fished it for awhile and found it was lacking in a few areas, mostly speed. Before I built the decks, bow rise was an issue.

I contacted Livingston and they suggested a 4 blade prop {more stern lift} and transom wedges. The transom on Livingston’s are pretty flat and you need a few more degrees of tuck in order to get over the bow wave faster.

I started with the 4 blade and making sure the engine ventilation plate was just under the center keel. That got me to the right rpm and was all I could get out of the 20hp Yamaha 4 stroke, 22mph @5500rpm.

I built the decks out of 3/4” plywood and cover with West Systems epoxy. My thinking was more glass to get the strength or 3/4” ply and less glass. I hate being itchy and I could use some strength up front. I looked at lot of Livingston’s before I bought mine. I noticed that there wasn’t much keeping the hulls from flexing up and down independently { like a bird flapping its wings}. So I built the decks with that in mind.

I make templates just like granite guys, glue gun and luan.

The whole outboard HP vs Weight vs ETEC vs 4 stroke vs carb vs EFI and all of the rest of the guessing...

Every build I saw I asked the same questions, what size OB, max speed, plane time etc etc.

I finally decided on a 2018 Suzuki EFI 4 stroke, ordered from Outboards Online.. $4600 OTD, with the remote, delivered to my garage. Totally satisfied with them.

I started the motor by hand at home yesterday, 2nd pull...it was purring. Today was break in day. What a pain in the ***. I did get enough time in to reach the point where I could go to 4000rpm, I hit 22 mph fast. Plane time was good. Max RPM is 6300. I have 7 more hours before I can even come close to that.

My favorite shot of the boat so far.

I did order transom wedges and a backing plate from Vance manufacturing. It should arrive soon. I think it will help because the motor is tucked in all the way and is pretty much straight up and down. Pretty cheap fix {$20} make sure you get the one with the individual holes, Ive read the slotted ones tend to creep up.

Decks etc were painted with Interlux Pre Kote primer and then Brightsides polyurethane. Rolled and tipped.

Anyways, that’s my build for now.

That’s a sick little build. Love the whole casting deck and center console. Badass little boat!

I love that boat. I was thinking also, damn, a person could build a great little boat and not have to spend a fortune then.......you bought the motor. OMG.. I hope you love that bad boy and get thousands of hours of fishing out of it......because that thing cost a fortune.

Bobber, You know how you a get stubborn mule to pulll the load? Put a carrot just ahead of him. LOL. So this was my carrot.

Oh and we think of boat expenses in terms of boat units. 1 boat unit is $1K. So 4.5 boat units, see that’s not so bad, right?

Nice job, putting in the time and effort.
Are you going to carpet the decks like a bass boat?

Tucson Arizona, we met 1/2 way in Yuma. You should get one, that boy of yours would love it! They are only little for just so
long lol. All of my boys are grow and too busy to fish with Dad now (Sad) so that’s the reason for this solo mission boat.

    You have no idea...
    I was there too!
When dad gave me the reins to the Trophy skiff when I got my drivers license, from then on I never fished again with pops...
Not by choice, I worked on dads day off "Mondays"
Figured there would always be more time later on in life...
Would do anything for one more day with pops, now that he's gone....:emoji_cry:

Not bad at all. You have one nice boat there. I'm just jealous. I need a way to get on the water and have just started thinking about how to make it happen. 99% of boats are not going to happen and I can't row that far. May I live vicariously through you?

Caballito - awesome job with this build. Would love to have those skills.

I recently purchased the same boat, and have the same challenges with bow rise. For that reason, I really want to install a center console to more evenly distribute the weight. I am having a hard time to contact anyone with Livingston(don't think they are building anymore) to get a center console for the boat. So when I saw where you contacted Livingston, is that contact you can share with me?

    Thanks

Just an update. I moved the OB as high as I can, ran out of transom. The anti-ventilation plate is above the center sponson by almost an inch. I tried to get video to check the depth, but there is too much water being funneled by the tunnel to see it. No ventilation/cavitation unless it’s trimmed way up. Gained some more rpms, 5750 max is 6100.

I checked the fuel burn during a trip to La Jolla. 16.6 NM burning a whopping 1.6 gallons of gas.....so about 10 nmpg or 12mpg.

Added some DIY Seadek ordered from Overtons during a 40%off sale. It’s in sale again at 35% off until Monday. FLASH35 is the code. Pretty easy install.

Been wondering about this boat lately, how has it handled being out in the ocean since you've had it for a while now.
