Woke up and it was raining. Dang! So headed to Murray a little later and was greeted by a windchill factor of....oh heck, I don't know, but it was not just cold, it was very cold. (When the heck is the warmer weather coming? I'm old and always cold lately...ha ha). OK, OK,....come on Vinny, get to the point.
Anyway, I love catching quantity when it comes to catching bass, but sometimes quality can also be fun. Today was one of those days. Many of you may have noticed from my recent reports that I have been catching bass on spoons. I am no spoon expert, but today I continued to use spoons and only caught 3 bass.
My first bass I caught weighed 5 lbs on the button. I was so stoked that I could have headed home right then and found comfort in the warmth of my house away from the cold wind.
My second bass made me glad that I stayed on the water. I was working a spoon bouncing it up and down off the bottom, when the tip of my rod stopped, pulled downward and the fight was on. Finally got it in and that bass weighed 6 1/2lbs.
My last bass(pic does not do justice..bass was fat from a better angle) weighed 4 1/2lbs.
So those were my 3 bass today. It would have been nice to catch(I am not complaining mcfish), just 2 more, but overall, it was really fun to catch some nice healthy bass. Also, I had a nice time on and off the water chatting and laughing with some of the guys out there fishing today at Murray. Tight lines to all of you!

Very nice. Proud of you! Are they sitting on points yet or chasing bait balls down deep?

They were down deep(50' plus) looking for shad to eat. I heard some guys say they were starting to catch bass in the shallower water on worms. I have not fished shallow for a number of weeks though.

Seems early for Murray bass to be shallow .......
probably some spunky young males sucked in by the full moon! I wouldnt be surprised to see a couple big females move up for this early full moon! I think the water temp is going to move most back to March!

You are probably right. I caught some healthy bass in March the last couple years(but not by sight fishing).
I can't wait!! (or will I be fishing at Sutherland next to you, fisheromen, RamonaAngler and a few others in March?....only time will tell). :)

There's also some schools of big crappie down deep in Murray..that also love spoons! I'm not sure even Mr. Vinnybass knows about them...and he's been fishing it as long as I have!

With the weather this week, we're going to have melting snow draining into Sutherland...that's not gonna help a little lake like that warm up very fast! So...I recommend that everyone stays away til July...except of course, you Mr. Vinnybass!

Edit: Something I would love to say someday: I caught 3 fish today, the smallest was 4.5 lbs!

I brought spoons because of your reports and tried them... I just don't know the lake that well so went back to what looked good to me. Got 6 shallow (5 on ds 1 on lipless) on the 12th including this mama:

SWEET!!!! GREAT JOB out there and thanks for sharing. I need to hit shallow water, but lately each week I am back in the deep water. If you see a Ranger boat following you or near you next trip or a camo colored Pro Angler 12...just ignore them....its not me...ha ha :)
    Tight lines

I will say I spent a long time blindly fishing a castmaster and dropshot way deeper than I ever have before due to your reports! I also think I figured out where one of the rockpiles is based on a weird offshore spot where 3 bass boats were hovering way too close for too long. Thank you for all of your reports they are really what got me to go check out the lake!

I’m not going to Sutherland until it gets warmer. It’s a heck of a lot colder up there and I get cold at Murray!
