For 2021, I’ve decided to make an effort to expand and explore more surf fishing spots aside from the usual stomping grounds.

Met up with Jenx for just such an occasion.

We explored an area today that was his first visit and my 2nd. But neither of us have been at a dead low.

Water was brrr cold but pleasantly clean of debris for the most part. Current and surge was manageable. The structures were also easy to find due to the -1.2ft tide.

Armed with the Werf Special, it resulted in the following.

2nd photo is from my first sesh, just to give Jenx a visual of the different tides.

Lastly, what are some of your fishing goals for 2021?

Will Look forward to everyone’s upcoming reports!

Great report! Awesome fish from the surf!

For 2021, my goal is to help my 9-year old son meet his goal of catching his first shark or bat ray with his new baitcaster he got for Christmas. First, we both need to learn how to use it!

Congrats again on the fish. I can see that area being productive, although if I ever fished there again I would use just mono, and bring a lot of pre-tied rigs. That place was snagsville.

2021 goals? Same as it's been for the past 3 years: corbina on the fly. That, and catching more silver in the bay.

I see ding dongs standing too close to the cliffs... Nice session, ScubaLee03 , and Jenx is always good for a laugh. Beautiful fish. This beach looked familiar to me, but at second glance, I don't think so. Guess my main goals are to catch more 20's this year, spend more time with my kids, and fish the IV more often (last year the travel restrictions put the hurt on my valley work). If this surf ever lays down, I should be able to finally target some of the big opaleye...

I’ve a couple rolling goals as well.

To catch a legal butt with the inflatable kayak and to share the stoke with a mini me one day.

For now, it’s just trying to share the hobby with the mrs. with a major lack of success. Been trying to get her to jump on a 1/2 day boat to experience the bonito or YT tug but it’s been a firm no.

Did get her to go on a skiff once though, :emoji_joy:

Thanks everyone for reading and for the responses.

Best of luck to everyone’s pursuit and to a successful year ahead.

As for me, my goals are probably way too many lol.

    1. Check species off my list that I know how to catch: mainly looking at halibut and corvina! I know the theory behind how to target them, just kinda suck at that kind of fishing lol. I got the gear and the knowledge, just gotta practice the technique.

    2. Master fishing the yak: have been messing around the LJ kelp beds this past December, looking to learn the places with structure for rockfish and bass, and if I'm dreaming big, yellowtail in the summer!

    3. Lobster: whether it be diving or hoop netting, I'm gonna get some keeper bugs if it kills me. If anyone is willing to take a dive newbie, I took a freediving class so I know basic safety and rescue techniques.

    4. Freshwater stuff! I am an exclusively saltwater fisherman. I fished for rainbow trout in the mountains when I was a boy scout a couple of times, but didn't retain any of that. Maybe make a trip to the IV as well for carp and cats.

Gotta take advantage of the wonderful fisheries we have here while I still can; don't know if I'll still be living here in two years.

That beach looks good, and nice bass!

I like fishing goals, adds something to it besides just enjoying being on the water. Checked off quite a few goals last year, great year on the water for me. This years goals are a 100lb+ bluefin, yellowtail on the surface iron, and to check off a few of the last "common" species I haven't caught yet, Lingcod, white sea bass, bonefish, spotfin croaker.

Took a trip up around the 88/89 up north last year, my goal for 2021 is to really explore that area way more.

I was a member of San Diego Freedivers for a number of years , good group , good knowledge and a large pool of potential partners , / Heres a link to the home page . Would like to take you myself but the aging process has made my abilities to free dive an unsafe proposition for myself or a partner . I do still do some surfline spearfishing / snorkeling . WR

Goals for me are plenty. But I’d like to start eating more fish. I release everything I catch currently. Also love to continue to learn the ropes. I’ve gained a lot of knowledge, both from this group and trial and error. Love to catch a legal Butt abd a Corvina from the surf, but to be honest just being out there is great for me. My girls have glimmers of wanting to go out with me, but dance usually wins out, hope to get them out more. Best of luck to all on goals!

    1. Get better (still lingering covid junk - or I have something else wrong with me)
    2. Possibly target YT on a few kayak outings and stick with that plan while out there.
    3. Fish more than last year.

Ok So I will take the bait . Anyone here actually tried eating midshipmen ? Deep water fish except spawning , obviously predatory , what's the meat look like Ling Cod ?? Just had to ask . There are some ugly creatures that taste pretty good . Is this one of them ? In all my years fishing I have only landed I . WR
