Just like scisports thread..."I couldn't stand it any longer"...I too needed to fish!
My buddies were at Lake Morena last weekend and said don't go...it'a a waste of time as the lake is dead as far as bass fishing goes. I took their advice until I woke up this morning, saw a warmer weather forecast, loaded up my kayak and headed out to the only freshwater lake open around here(actually around 48 miles for me). The drive there was pretty quiet and as soon as I paid my fees, the excitement of being able to fish again was running through my body...especially when I finally saw the lake.
I launched my kayak and headed out to a few points and worked chatterbaits, spinnerbaits and then tossed a wide assortment of plastics in and out of the stick-ups and between the huge rocky areas. I worked shallow and I then worked deep thinking they may be down there. In the shallows carp were splashing around and that was pretty crazy to watch. I moved along to every area that looked like it would hold bass. Nobody was catching anything from shore. I even ran into a couple guys in boats fishing for bass that had not had a bite either. I felt that on any cast, I was going to get bit...and then later reality hit. I got skunked! Not one bite at all!
Usually I would be upset but on the drive home I realized that it was still fun for me to break away from the house and be able to fish again.
For now all I can say is "Stay safe my friends."

A few pics (looks can be deceiving on fishy looking spots) :)

I think in late April early May the bite will be starting to pick on if Morena is still open.
It can only get better based on fishing there today. :)

I guess talking to you this morning about Imperial Valley made me think about fishing so much that I just had to go somewhere.

If you are asking me... it was around 58 degrees at Morena. When I was in pretty shallow there was a point where it was 59 degrees.

Vinny you get an A for your effort. Sometimes(this being one of them) it's just great to be out there under the big sky on the water. I'm really jealous now!

Thanks! You are right as it was fun just being out on a lake. The weather was nice and not windy till early afternoon when I was about to leave.
To avoid a skunk if I ever go back again, I should bring a medium action rod, peanut butter dough balls, niblets corn, bread, small hooks and bobbers. I bet I could catch a a kayak full of carp...........nah!..that would suck.
I rather work hard all day just to catch some bass or a bass...ha ha :)

As the poet once said: Better to have fished and failed, than never to have fished at all!

Could be, but I don't want to inadvertently be a plagiarist! ;)

Thanks for the report. Morena looks so cool, with all of the boulders.

I wonder how the carp spawn affects the bass bite.

In a heavy spawn at my lake, it turns the water close to the shore very muddy and shuts off the bite!

Makes sense. Carp spawn in the shallows, so do the bass just live with it, or go to deeper waters? And stop feeding because their appetite's suppressed or because there's no prey around?
