This is a double post, I've been posting in the fly section but figured I would let the surf homies who dont pop in there know what I've been up to.
Picked up a fly rod a month ago and have been fly fishing the surf once or twice a week since then. First time out was a learning experience, but I've been catching fish on the fly every session since then. Mostly palm to hand sized barred surf perch, but today landed a spotfin croaker, which is actually my first spotfin, they had managed to elude me to this point. Man that thing fought like hell on the fly rod, felt like an absolute beast! Been having lots of fun fishing the fly rod, I love how active it is.

How was the water temp? Looks like you're wearing waders? Thinking of making a trip out this weekend.

The website I checked the swell on this morning said 60, felt about right. I was indeed wearing waders. Looking forward to those summer mornings in boardshorts

That is pretty much the idea. In the last few months I've seen a few guys fly fishing the surf. I didnt even know how fly fishing worked actually hahaha. I watched some youtube videos and it looked like fun, wanted to give it a try and learn something new and grow as an angler. It's been a lot of fun and super stoked today to get a coveted fish on the fly. Blessed

Not very deep, probably knee deep. Most of the fish are coming from holes that are half foot to 2 foot deep when i viewed them at zero tide.

Man I skunked on the float the tube this morning..Who woulda thunk I'd have more luck on the fly rod in the surf than float tubing the bay with a fish finder lol

    Way to go!

I tried fly in the surf for the first time last week. What a mess! LOL! South wind and a strong south swell with short period. I gave up after 1/2 an hour of looking totally ridiculous.

If you've found any instructional videos that were particularly good, please post. also, what was the name of that fly again and where did you get it?

    Thanks.
