Fished a full day offshore trip on the San Diego today. Matt was at the helm. Weather was chilly in the morning but turned into a beautiful day, minimal swell and it went almost flat in the afternoon. With the weekends bluefin explosion, and their disappearance yesterday, I wasnt expecting a slay fast. It turned out to be a pretty awesome day of fishing.
We got to the zone around 8:30. We saw some scattered bluefin jumping but no substantial.schools early on. Then, a few good schools that didnt want to play ball. Bluefin being bluefin. Around 11am we stopped on a school of good sized bonito and lit up with bites. I broke in my new jigstick and got my first fish on the surface iron with a bonito. Actually hooked 4 or 5 on the surface iron but only landed one the others popped off.
Early afternoon, we stopped on a bluefin school and 4 guys hooked up immediately. The fish were big, 2 were lost but deckhands helped navigate to land 2 bluefin around 100-120lbs.
Mid afternoon, we found some schools that were biting a bit. One school of 40-70lb fish that produced 7 or 8 fish, and another school of 20-30lb models that bit a little. I got my limit, one at 60lbs and a 30lb model. Hooked another one and pulled the hook at gaff, the captain took a swipe at with the gaff but it got away. All 3 bluefin I hooked on a 160g flatfall fishing 60# on my fathom 40n. Put the wood to those fish and got them in pretty fast.
All in all, an awesome day on the water, I got to scratch that tuna itch, got a cooler full of fish, first fish on the surface iron and first tunas on a jig. Deckhands were phenomenal coaching anglers and getting fish landed. Capt matt kept us out late to give a try on a few other schools, we got back to the docks at 8. Had a blast. Final tally was 60 bonito and 25 bluefin for 36 anglers. If you are looking for your first bluefin, or just like pulling on good sized fish, this season is looking to be wild, get out there. Tight lines.

They were really good grade bonito. I'm a big fan of bonito fishing but those were the biggest I've seen in person. They pull friggin hard lol. Was a blast on the jigstick. It happened several times that one would hit the surface iron, pop off, and immediately hit it again. Think I'm going to be a fan of this surface iron fishing. My confidence and ability casting the conventional reels has come a long way in the past couple years

Oh I think they will. Day to day who knows but we saw plenty of fish out there. What day and boat are you out again chris? I certainly hope they are chomping then too, I'm on a 1.5 in a couple weeks

    San Diego on the 27th

Packing a 60lb, 80lb and 100lb setup as well as the 270H and now a jigstick...
Interestingly, finished swapping rings and hooks yesterday on some 100g Coltsnipers and 140mm Baitsticks

I brought my 100 and fished it on the stop that got the 120-130lb fish. If you have it and these fish are out there, better bring it. One of the guys that lost a big one was fishing a tiny little avet and got spooled. No tiny reels vs bluefin! Lol

Awesome report. Good for you man. I’m chomping at the bit to get into a few of those bigger models, although my lower back says, “ just stick to the Bonito kid “.

Definitely rent some heavy gear. All the landings are advising bring a 50# minimum and recommending bring a 80-130# if you have it. Try and link up with chris on the boat. Talk with the deckhands too, they are excellent at making sure you're rigged up properly and answering any questions you might have. They will tie your knots for you if you ask. Tell a deckhand it's your first time out and they will help you get on a fish. On my trip Tuesday, 4 or 5 guys got their first bluefin, one dude was looking kind of down near the end of the day and a deckhand picked a bait for him and got him hooked up, coached him to land the fish. Dude was ecstatic when it hit the deck. The SD crew is among the very best, they will do all they can for you

Those plus size bonito were nuts. On the second bonito stop, I wasnt sure what we were stopping on and chucked the flat fall. Bonito hit it immediately and pulled some drag on 60#, ripped the hook out, and hit it again and ripped the hook out again lol. The stern was mayhem of tangles on the chaotic fighting bonito, I stuck to the bow with irons
