During my morning coffee walk on the beach, I noticed some big dead sand crabs washed up on the shore. I haven't done much shore fishing in SD but took this as a sign to start.

I started walking the beach about 1 hour after low-tide in search for sand crabs. There was about a million. The problem is that the majority were tiny, like the size of rolly pollys but they were plentiful. Found a few small ones that were big enough to fit on a hook. Carolina rig with like a 1ounce weight.

The sea weed was terrible, like 10/10. Only fished for like 30 minutes but managed to hook-up on my first YFC.
Found some normal sized sand crabs with eggs this morning after surfing. Guess its hit or miss.

Looking forward to fishing more shore. Is shore fishing the best around low-tide because the waves are more manageable?

That salad looks brutal. Similar when i checked Mission beach yesterday. Best advice I have is try to find somewhere cleaner or fish during early morning. Nice catch by the way

Depends on the spot; there are some reefs that are only fishable from shore at low tide, and structure that is only covered by water at high tide. If you dont catch anything at one spot at high tide, go back at low tide to see if anything changes. Y

Don't think those micro sand crabs won't catch fish... I got this corbina with one even smaller than than those, last year, about this time, at Pacific Beach...

Found the full size sand crabs out there yesterday. The wind was strong and current was ripping. Caught a striped Perch. A few bites but hard to set hook with wind/current ripping.

    Nice fish! Thats awesome.

I actually only caught fish with the smaller sand crabs (admittedly they are small fish). With the big crabs, the fish just bite the egg sacks off the back.
