Just a quick am trip to Murray and I spent way too much time trying to find busting or any bass that stirred the surface. Ended up with 4 small bass: 3 on spoons and one on a cool bait. Now the heartbreak of the day. Tossed a cool bait off a point and let it sink to the bottom(roughly 20'). Reeling it slowly, it stopped and then my rod started bending and coming from the depths was a nice bass that was pulling very strong. As soon as it hit the surface, my heart started beating faster as from my conservative estimates, it was somewhere between 7-9 lbs. Not giant to some of you guys, but a lot better than the 5.5lb bass I caught a few months back at Murray. The bass was only about a boat and a half away from me and all I was thinking was I can't wait to land it. It was fighting very hard but getting closer to my boat as I had a steady tight line pulling it in. Then, the dreadful leap and as the bass shook its head, my cool bait went flying out of his mouth. I just stood there stunned. That final splash was so loud and I keep replaying the whole thing in my head. Those small cool bait hooks are so small and didn't help, but the fact is I lost a nice bass today. Sorry to share this.....but only other fisherman that have lost a nice fish may understand my state of mind.
    Peace....and tight lines to all
My small cool bait hook was perfect for this dink.....ha ha

I can commiserate if that is what you are looking for. You can do some things to stop that jump, but to me it is one of the defining moments of bass fishing. I usually let them jump and enjoy the show. You got most of the good out of that fish anyway.

We’ve all been there and it’s gut wrenching but at least you hooked him and you got to see him, I’d still be stoked and you should be.

Seeing him is part I keep replaying in my head. I had the bass near the surface and saw his size while fighting him to get him closer to my boat. In a split second....all the thrills were gone.
Oh well..... thanks everyone for listening to me whine. That bass is somewhere else in the lake, but I will still be fishing that spot every trip to Murray just hoping.
    :)

I love the jump as well, but if it is big I will jam my rod into the water to prevent it! I got to witness a bass jumping off of VinnyBass 's line! Looked like a 9 pounder.:emoji_stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Yes...you did witness that bass I lost at Sutherland. The only difference is I forgot all about that bass quickly(2.75 lbs???), but will not forget this one for a while....ha ha

If I broke off the cool bait and someone caught him down the road...then at least I could have found out how much he weighed...ha ha.

Shhhhhhhhhh! I just said that("the bass is somewhere else in the lake" so that mcfish doesn't start showing up in my spots...ha ha), but I will be fishing that point more often now.

Last local club offshore trip we were getting some nice yellows off paddies in the 10-12 lb range. I dehook one, bait back up, cast out and a second later my rod doubles over almost pulling me over the rail. With my Avet sxj 6/4 drag screaming I run down the rail and "pop" there goes my knot (SDJam) on a 25 lb floro leader. AAAARRRRGGGGH ! a real biggie lost after 10 seconds plus a certain jackpot fish what ever it was. Even though I limited out on some nice whitefish later that breakoff stuck with me for the rest of the day. Retie, retie, retie ! :emoji_angry:

A better one is just another cast away. Keep fishing.
