Alarm went off this morning and didnt want to get up, slept like crap. But I knew I would regret it later if I didnt go fish. These types of mornings were I have to drag myself out of bed always seem to pay off, fish gods smile upon it.
First cast around 6:15 on the incoming tide. Water was moving pretty good. First fish a snot stick, then hooked a nice fish with some weight, knew it was what I was looking for, the vamps. Fished off the same rock for hour and a half and landed 5 shortfin corvina, 4 barracuda and an ambitious mackerel. Kept 3 vina that were bleeding out or took a hook to the gills, biggest one at 24". Of the two others, a smaller one I popped out of the water for a quick pic and released without touching it, the other was another good sized one probably 23-25", I saw it only had 1 hook in its lip and released it still in the water. Bite turned off approaching high tide, and without a bite for 45 mins and some fish in the cooler I called it a day. Moral of the story, always go fish!
Fun day, seeing that silver breach the water and go haywire trying to shake the hook never gets old. Didn't see any bait or boils, no sign of the corvina but they were there.
Also, always see lots of posts about what setups to fish the flash minnow on. I use a 7'6 ugly inshore select medium power with an Okuma RTX-30, 20# braid and a 2 foot 12# mono leader. Tight lines

Very good sesh..... I don't like killing the vinas either but the upside is they're very good eating.

Not exactly a secret spot lol. Right time, right place, right technique. I've been grinding for them so it's nice when you earn a day like today

Yeah I dont wanna kill every one I hook. It's tough to land a good size one rock hopping and have them live. After I had a few in the cooler made an effort to not handle and release the others. But if they're bleeding or hooked bad, it's my pleasure to eat them. Man my vacuum sealer is getting a workout this week...

I took the front and middle trebles off, just left the tail hook., using my old Rapalas years ago. less injury, most could be released. But, I always kept just one, for dinner for me and the wife. Wow, I haven't done that in many years!!
Nice work!! Great morning of fishin'/catchin'!
I still have two of my old Rapalas.

I've been thinking of taking the middle off or going to inline singles, at least for the patterns I use to target vina. Not sure if I want to alter the lures weight or action. I'm a big rapala fan too

Ya know, that spot used to fish like a desert for me. When they opened SD bay I fished over there a few times and caught a legal hali and saw lots of bait and boils. Been fishing over there once a week or so since and it's been pretty good to me

I went to singles for my bay hard baits. Only crankbaits still have trebles. Much easier to unhook small cudas and macs with the singles. Especially at night or low light situations.

Cooking a few fillets right now in a cajun style breading deep fried, bringing the rest to some coworkers. Gotta share with the homies

Unreal session at first I thought you must of had a boat or yak, but from shore really gets me going. Try switching the trebles to single hooks, you’ll save the fish and your fingers.
