Switching back to the islands tomorrow. We chased small boils all day long but 49 anglers onboard couldn’t figure out the formula

Because 45 of the 48 were doing the same thing. Soaking bait.

My cousin and I chased those pop up schools all day on Saturday in his 26’ boat. We threw on at least 20 active schools before finally hooking up and bringing on board. Super finicky fish... we would creep up on the boil within jig range, and land jigs dead center, or over the school and reel through. Time after time no takers, super frustrating ! At one stop, I actually hooked a 4” anchovy, so we down sized everything and that’s when we both finally hooked up. Anyway, I can see charters having a hard time with this type of fishing, as the schools disappear very quickly and you need to run to the next one. We upped our odds just by being able to cover much more ground quickly. ( a #30 and a #50lb bluefin is what we ended up with, but worked hard for them )

Normally the ones boiling on top will not bite. They get fouled hook yes. But they will bite if presented with a nice formed popper that triggers a reaction. Lots of casts for sure.

Casting a sinker type of lure in front and past the school and letting it sink for 10 seconds and then retrieve through water column in front of the moving fish works. The fish that are eating the bait ball are below the horizon. They feel much more confident eating below the surface.
