Got my new Kastking reel and was itching to test it out. Hit the north jetty after sundown at 7:45 pm. Hiked out past the blue house and fished for 1 and a half hours on market shrimp. Managed a couple tiny bass, and two new species for me: black croaker and what I think is a barred surf perch! Also got a 12” bass; new personal best! Sadly, no sculpin. My dreams of a sculpin taco will have to wait until another night.

New reel was a game changer; didn’t lose a single fish I hooked tonight.

Nice variety of fish. Glad to hear the new gear was a success. Want to see a report when you get a reel screamer!!

Thanks! Anything big was previously broken off of my crappy old reel; shouldn't be too long before I get something good.

Yeah! I love saltwater fishing because there are so many types of fish you can catch, all on the same bait too.

I got to get better at identifying these perch, lol.

A bit off topic - Are those black croaker ok to eat? I heard they were questionable for eating since they are bottom feeders but I'm not sure then why they don't say the same for spotfin and yellow croakers.

Or put another way - would you be willing to eat a black croaker?

There's a saying that we Chinese eat everything that walks and swims except for boats and cars...the black croaker is no exception.

This one was small though, so I let it go.

I have eaten many black croaker. Just harvest them from clean water, like any other fish. From the MB jetties? No prob.. back of SDB down on the flats? Not ever...

They're pretty tasty, though i prefer yellowfin croaker. Similar meat maybe a little softer. I think all the croakers are worth eating

Solid catch! Might have to join you soon on an evening or more of a midnight/early morning jetty Hunt.
