Adam Hinkle caught and released an 87 pound blue catfish at Otay today while fishing for bass using 4 lb test. No matter what the circumstances, that is a pretty amazing feat. I missed Adam's call today, but will try to get ahold of him tomorrow for all the details and see if he'll allow me to post the photos.

This is an absolutely obese looking fish too, and he got some really cool unique shots of it.

If this is true it is definitely a new line class record.

Was anything submitted to the IGFA?

I was in Anglers Marine yesterday when Adam called in looking for someone to help him land the fish. He was looking for someone to drive down to the lake to help him. I don't know how long the fight was but I would imagine, since he was calling for help, it was LLOONNGG!

Are these the stupidest fish alive or what? I thought it was amazing when the 100+ fish was caught on 10# at San V. I'm sure there is some skill involved on the part of the fisherman, but come on, all the fish would have to do is just keep swimming or just lay on the bottom. Doubt this would ever happen with a Channel cat.

i'm guessing he was drop shotting and on spinning rod if he was using 4lb. how did he not get spooled? and better yet break it off with it trying to run into stuff.

    either way congrats!

First off, this is a legit story. I have seen the pictures, and I'm sure they will be posted up here sometime today. Adam called me for help as well, but I was on a guide trip at Lake Hodges. For it to be a IGFA record, you must be using an IGFA approved and rated line. I believe he was using a import line that was not IGFA rated. Also, often times you have to send in your rod, line and reel to them for inspection. Its a personal accomplishment to catch a fish like that on 4lb test. He was not fishing for catfish, he has no reason to lie or anything to prove to anyone.

Adam is a great guy, who made a great catch after a very long fight. Congrads on the catch of a lifetime.

Wow, must have been no weeds or rocks for that cat to run in. These big blues seem to not fight to well, they always get caught on light line. Anymore details?

why would someone lie about catching a big blue catfish? Whats is he going to gain from that? haha.

Impressive. My buddy caught a 30lber on 10# flipping ikas under docks. Thought we had orloff the bass until it jetted out from under the dock.

He must be a Shimano guy.

True, but why would an avid bass fishermen, and one with a reputation of being a great bass fishermen, try to get attention by lying about a huge catfish caught on four pound test? Make's no sense. He caught the fish, bottom line............................................................................................Now go and catch you one.

Garett the line does not have to be specific type or brand. They need a sample of the line to test its strength and determine what pound test it realy is. You dont need to send in any other form of equipment. I have no idea what the line records are but I bet he can get one of the records. Even if his line tested stronger then 6 it would bump him up to the next line weight. I am sure Adam took a bunch of pics and I cant wait to see them. Hopefully he weighed it on a certified scale. As for big blues being dumb, I dont think so. As long as you can keep them free from rocks and wood etc they can be caught on light line. It would just take all day. Eventualy if the angler has enough skill and the fish is in open water it can be done. I am sure Adam kept the boat on top of the fish so it couldnt spool him.
