That was the norm, but even when I was young frowned on guys taking really small bass home. I understand people take fish to eat....but taking a tiny bass and throwing in a bucket or hooking it a stringer was just wrong to me...ha ha

Unless the lake has massive quantities of shad, trout, or crawdads!

I saw that one on the list....I guess it counts. No freaking bass is going to go to the bottom and gobble up a diver's weight. Very suspicious.

No.it was not his bass that had the diver's weight.
I fished that lake religiously from 1970 on with my father. Those big bass spooked quickly because of the very clear water there. Zimmerlee said he saw the huge bass suspended about 5 or 6 fleet down from the surface in about 20 feet of water while he cruised over with a lake boat. First of all...that bass would have taken off if you were that close it it in a boat. He said he put a nightcrawler on a treble hook and lowered it down and the fish opened it mouth and grab it.
A suspended bluegill will grab a nightcrawler like that but no way in hell did that actually take place the way it was told. The bass was suspended in crystal clear water and not afraid of the boat and was only down 5 or 6 feet from the surface in 20 feet of water???? That bass sees the boat and the fisherman and is not just going to open its mouth and eat a worm....that bass would have swam off. I think the bass was dying and just using my imagination I would say he pulled it into the boat(he did not have a net). His first time fishing Miramar so anyone in those days who fished there knows the odds of that happening the way he explained it was BS.
Zimmerlee used to pull up to where I was fishing a number of times and kind of hang around if he saw me catching bass. I was not catching big bass, but I used to say to myself....OMG this guy again. He would just come right up to your spot and start fishing. Maybe you think I was jealous, I guess I was in one way, but I knew this guy does not know crap about bass fishing and I never to this day believed his story and a few old timers that may still be out there never believed it either. Wow...sorry to ramble on.
I just happen to have the Bassmaster mag from 1973 with his interview in it on some of the stuff I wrote about...but already knew of his story of how he said he caught that bass.

The bass with the diver's weight was caught in 1988 by Sandy DeFresco. It had a 2lb 8oz lead weight in its stomach.

Thank you for the correction. Guess I had my fraudulent stories mixed up. I wonder if any on the list were snagged?

Zimmerlee did use a treble hook......and several anglers claimed to see Zimmerlee pull the dying bass from the water instead of actually catching it........just saying.
