I crossed a fish off my Species List that has eluding me for a long time.
    82512DF0-D2A2-460A-9E0C-21228385CD4C.jpeg 0E990D24-DE36-4FB5-8061-504F05AA0427.png
    The Zebra Perch.
It got snagged on the jerkbait and I thought I had a nice Hali on. But This is even better.

Anyway I made this Species List from all the fish I have seen caught from the bay or surf in SoCal that are fairly common. Like striper, triggerfish, and broomstail Gouper aren’t common enough here to count. That is a separate list.
I named it appropriately the “SoCal Bay and Surf Species List” (fairly common and get larger than a foot)”
    Here it is.

    Baitfish:
    Jack Smelt
    Top Smelt
    Grunion
    Pacific Mackerel
    Jack Mackerel
    Pacific Sardine
    Round Herring/Mexican Sardine
    Lizardfish
    Queenfish
    Salema
    Pacific Anchovy

    Perch/Panfish:
    Walleye Surfperch
    Barred Surfperch
    Rainbow Surfperch X
    Rubber Lip Perch X
    Zebra Perch
    Half Moon
    Black Surfperch
    Opaleye
    Blacksmith
    Garibaldi
    Rock Wrasse
    Largemouth Blenny
    Kelpfish

    Silver:
    Yellowfin Croaker
    Spotfin Croaker
    Black Croaker
    Sargo
    Corbina
    Shortfin Corvina
    Pacific Needlefish
    Bonefish
    White Sea Bass
    Barracuda
    Stripped Mullet

    Bass:
    Spotted Sand Bass
    Barred Sand Bass
    Calico Bass
    Giant Black Sea Bass

    Eels:
    Moray Eel

    Shark and Rays:
    Gray Smooth-hound Shark
    Brown Smooth-hound Shark
    Leopard Shark
    Soupfin Shark
    Sevengill Shark X
    Angel Shark X
    Horn Shark
    Shovelnose Guitarfish
    Banded Guitarfish
    Thornback Skate
    Common Stingray
    Diamond Ray
    Pelagic Ray X
    Butterfly Ray
    Bat Ray

    Other:
    California Halibut
    Midshipmen
    Stag Horn Sculpin
    Blue Diamond Turbot
    Fantail Sole X
    Grass Rockfish
    Kelp Rock Fish
    Brown Rock Fish
    Sculpin
    Cabezon
    Lingcod X
    Sheepshead
    Bonito

Ok that’s a lot... the “X” means I haven’t caught one yet. And there are some on here that I haven’t got a legal, or haven’t caught on lure yet.
Anyway looks like I have three to go!
If you see a Species missing that gets over a foot and is somewhat common please let me know!
I will make other Species lists in the future.

I’m curios. How many species do you have left? Does anybody besides Werfless have it filled? Lol.

Thank you Werfless. I don’t know the difference between pelagic ray and diamond ray. And I believe I have caught a brown smooth-hound and I have caught brown and kelp rockfish forgot those and I will add them. I have to look up white Surfperch. And Im not sure if pile Perch are common down in SoCal. Broomstail grouper are pretty uncommon. Please list the etc when you have time.

Congrats on the zebra perch! Hooked in the mouth, or when you say snagged, do you mean snagged in the back?

From your list, these are the ones I don't have:

Mexican Sardine - Haven't heard of this one. What's the species name?
    Rubberlip Seaperch
    Striped Mullet
    Giant Seabass
    Horn Shark
    Banded Guitarfish
    Diamond Stingray
    Midshipman
    Cabezon

As far as ones to add:

Pacific Staghorn Sculpin - The ones down here might not reach a foot, but up north I think they do.
Separate out Jacksmelt and Topsmelt. Take a pic with the small dorsal fin lifted up to tell them apart.
    California Needlefish
Striped Bass - Too rare to include for San Diego?
Fantail Sole - I've seen them caught from SD Bay.
Longnose Puffer - If it's not common enough now, it probably will be soon as waters warm up.
Round Herring - Is this the Mexican Sardine?

Is it legal to target Girabaldi and black sea bass, since they are protected species?

Haha. Yes illegal to target but they were both bycatch of course. Thought I should take them down but I decided not to. Black Sea Bass are pretty common in the surf in my experience. Last year I caught more Black Sea bass than batray.

The silver doesn’t get over a foot anyway and shiner. Is black Surfperch and blacksmith the same thing?

    Yeah snagged in the stomach.
    Ahh forgot needlefish.
I have caught a stag horn sculpin before but I thought it was a weird goby. I will add it.
I never tried looking at the difference between jack smelt and top smelt. But yes I will separate.
Striper too rare for SoCal but I caught one before.
I guess I will add the Fan Tail sole...
Long nose puffer fish from what I read doesn’t get over a foot.
Thank you for telling me the name of the round herring. I saw someone said it’s a Mexican Sardine which what I looked up is another name used for it. I will switch it out.

Cool, I remember one time seeing a school of those in shallowish water and not knowing what they were. I chased them and threw lures at them all morning.

I like that the surfperch cheat sheet shows the max length for each species. Definitely handy for Cyborgstarfish's criteria.
