Congrats on the zebra. That's at the top of my wish lists along with a striper in the surf ( I accidentally spelled that with two PP's before catching it... although I will take one of those in the surf as well).

I just refer to black perch as Moustache perch.

You ever snag a full grown black California sea hare.... twice.... like hooking up on the biggest kelp pod.

White seaperch ...not surfperch...used to be very common in Mission Bay. Haven't seen one in a few years. W's chart shows a max length of 12.5 in? Dang...i had one that went almost 15.

I got a zebra perch up at South TP....apparently in some areas in OC and LA they are common as dirt.

Diamond rays have finlets on the tail, pelagic ray have a round tail and spiracules down the back.. Plenty of species missing.. BTW.. Ever been casting a jerkbait at THAT spot, think you got hit and set the hook into rock? Sound familiar? Or be working in the dark along those other areas and all of a sudden been bit and broke off before you could wind? Just asking...

How common are rubberlips in San Diego? From what I've seen some people just call black perch rubberlips, but I can't say I've seen a pic of an actual one.

Closest I have caught one is Dana Point, I think, from shore. There are a few in wreck alley, and I have seen a couple caught at the jetties

No pic but I have caught a couple of suspiciously rubberlippy looking things that weren't colored like black perch; no blue on the anal fin. One at the OB pier and one at Harbor Island.

Yes Y? Not with jerkbait though I know better. Did you put a lure trap or something there haha. Had some big bites and I set the hook and the rod barely bends and it gets snipped off.

    Please tell me other species!

08E44642-7ABE-43D9-B3CD-DBB2CFA233F0.jpeg Is this diamond or pelagic?
It was huge 3 foot wing span and 5ft from nose to tip of tail.

Yes I will add swell shark for sure I thought they are rare down here but I seen someone catch one from Oceanside pier.
Thresher shark is pretty rare from surf and bays. I’ve caught one though. I guess I’ll add it.
Pacific spiny dogfish is basically a smooth hound with horns lol. I personally have never seen them caught before.
California skate though I never seen one before. And did some research and it says they are found from 45-5000’+ deep. I think they are pretty rare from surf and bays but I will add to the super mega list I’ll make.
Yellowtail is rare from the surf. I caught one but it’s rare.
I’ve only heard of people catching white croaker but I thought it was nickname for queenfish and searched it up and they are different for sure. They have smaller mouth than queenfish. Basically a Yellowfin croaker with no stripes.

Thank you. I think in the future I’ll just make a list of everything and add “rarities”

Looked up spotfin croaker recently ... "Large males assume a brassy color during spawning and were called "golden croakers" and thought by some old-timers to be a separate species" I dont know if that helps.
