So, three weeks ago, Butch and I thought we’d try to get in on the bluefin bite as we had heard some good reports coming in out near the 371 area. Long story short, The seas were pretty nasty, and we struck out after probing around the 302 and 371 areas till mid morning. At around 10:00 we lost patience and headed for the Islands. We plucked off a few Calico near middle grounds, and then Butch decided to take a snooze in the cuddy around 11:30 so I took over and slowly motored around looking at the graph. Half way down the leeward side of South Island, I see two red bananas laying on the bottom in 50ft. Of water, so I doubled back and dropped down a lively jumbo sardine. Whack ! I hook up and it feels pretty heavy with big head shakes.. I got it up to the boat and stuck a gaff into it, and bring it over. It’s a nice halibut and it went ballistic once inside the boat. Lol.. I look in at Butch and he’s sitting up with blood shot eyes. What’s that !? That’s dinner, I said.. The halibut went 33” and almost 14Lbs. We caught a few more fish that day and then headed in. —— Trip #2… We launched at 6:00 last Saturday, got bait and made the decision to trek out to San Clemente Island. It’s 60-65 miles one way so the weather really needs to cooperate. And it did.. Flat glassy water all the way out. We stopped on 5-6 beautiful patties on our way, but nobody home. These patties should have been holding fish, but for some reason, they were empty. We arrived at the southern tip of the island at around 9:30 and motored our way to the back side where we found kelp beds, and lots of Calico Bass willing to play. The water was absolutely teeming with bait fish, just outside the kelp areas. Butch caught several nice Calicos on 1-1/2 oz tube baits right off the bat.. Tube baits and 60 gram Colt Snipers were getting nailed.. I ended up catching a 26” halibut and a 6lb. Sheepshead that I put on ice, but other than that, we released all fish. The ride back was fast.. We made it from the tip of San Clemente Island, to Ballast Point in 2 hours flat.. There aren’t many days off our coast that you can run 34-35 mph for 2 hours straight. Last Saturday was one of them.. Anyway, here’s a few pics. ( side note: the 33” halibut had a 6” baby halibut in its gut, half digested ).

NIce report Jason and those are some really nice fish! I gotta find a "boat friend". My daughter is dating a guy that owns a sailboat...not quite the kind of boat I was hoping for.

Okay not a thread highjack but related to this.

My Ex’s father for all the times in the world I invited him out, despite claiming how he missed fishing, never once took that opportunity from me. Her step dad was like BAM, let’s go. It’s like here’s a golden ticket… nope not interested.

Back to topic: Nice report Jason! I’ve been wanting to fish the windward kelp beds of Clemente for a while now, I hear the action is pretty wicked.

Dude, you're holding those golden tickets out in front of the wrong people. Get that shoulder going and let's go! The 1089 is getting final coats of epoxy today/tomorrow. The 800M goes on the wrapper next.

(Also apologize for the hijack Jason)

Thanks guys !… San Clemente was definitely a learning experience. Cary, the back side is definitely where everything thrives. Once you get to the island, excitement takes over and you just want to drop a line right then and there, but we made the 5-7 mile trek around to the windward side after getting a tip from some other fishermen that they had done real well back there. It’s night and day as far as sea life goes. Kelp, structure, seals, and tons of bait fish back there.. As much as I hate seals, if seals are around, then you’re usually in the right spot.. The seals didn’t bother us much at all because they had all they could eat everywhere you looked. We tried fishing the leeward side of the island for an hour and a half before we left, but not a single fish or bite.. We probably would have skunked if we hadn’t gotten the tip to motor around to the back side. Crazy..

A little preview...this one looks like an 8 year old that broke into her mom's closet and then stopped at the jewelry box on her way out of the bedroom.

Stomped on the jewelers box my butt. That is gorgeous.

BFT are not what’s causing the itch, it’s a stupid checkered and bronze colored bass. I love wasting all my physical energy on bluefin… but something about fishing Kelp Mats and pulling those angry little fkers out of the kelp as the try to trick you out just gets me going.

Ya ! Those are bad azz Keith.. I played around with that 3D box wrap a few years ago, but I used the wrong colors and didn’t get that 3D look to it. I tore it off. Lol. Yours looks killer.

Nice work man. Excellent knife work as well, something satisfying about those bones sticking out with no meat left. My dog has the same look when I'm filleting...waiting for some scraps lol.
What daiwa reel is that on your bass rod?

There is some inside boiler rocks that are seriously something special there. For now I get to sit back and look at the horizon, it’s actually a pretty great view now that I’ve been grounded enough. These past 4 years have been to much, it’s time to get back to normal. TOPWATER CALICO BASS IS FOR SURE THE PLACE TK START!

Thank you Sir.. My dog was a pup last year and I fed him too much rock fish scrap, and made him sick for two weeks. Pretty bad.. I ended up nursing him back with a straight chicken and rice diet ( cooked leg and thighs ) etc. I still feed him fish scrap, just not as much. Lol. That reel is a little Daiwa Tatula 100 - 8:1 retrieve. I bought it in 2015 and it’s been a great little reel for 10 lb mono work. I recently spooled it with 30 lb J Braid and 20 lb. mono leader for throwing Kroc spoons and plastics etc. I mounted it to an old 7’ Seeker Inshore rod for giggles.. It’s actually a fun little set up and comfortable to use. It’s all good until I hook a Yellow or a bigger Bonito on it. Going to smoke that little reel. Lol.
