I've been wanting to target rays off the pier recently and in general up my surf S&R game. A couple changes I made have improved things:

Lighter weight--I definitely have gotten more bites when the current can move my c-rig a little ways. It's worth re-casting 3 or 4 times, and so in the fairly calm conditions we've had at Oceanside I didn't go above 3/4oz on my bait rod.

Line-- a stiffer leader helps a lot in preventing that 'helicopter' action in the surf which causes line twist; but it can make the bait look less natural. I find 20lb mono a happy medium for most sizes of bottom fish.

    Chum--when I don't chum, I don't get bit.

The main thing that's frustrating me are the freakin thornbacks! Big mouths relative to their body size (it seems to me) but they fight like plastic bags compared to bat rays, butterflies, diamond rays, and just about every other ray besides flying saucers. Don't get me wrong, I still think they look badass and still like catching them, but all the other species are way more exciting.
Anyway. Next step for me is trying for leopards from the surf. I can't remember the last time I caught a legal kitty!

Evidently! Last October I saw a ton of batties and leos in the shallow water so this time around I mean to put in some real effort for them
