I was fishing Oceanside for a quick afternoon session had the day off work and went to catch a few bass off the north jetty. Usually I bring an arsenal of poles but today I just took my bass rod and my fishing backpack that’s all. I caught some dink’s on the bay side and it slowed down so I figured since I had my board shorts on I would I fish in the surf. I’ve caught some legal Hali’s in the surf by the north jetty about a year ago so I figured what the hell let’s see what happens. I was fly lining full chovies in the surf and enjoying the water and the sun. I was about waste deep looking for movement in the water and I see a 4-5 foot shark swimming about 4 feet in front of me. My heart races and I stay still the shark swims casually by almost like it didn’t care what I was doing or who I was, I’m pretty sure it knew I was there. I lose sight of it in the surf and start walking backwards and then all of the sudden I am getting spoiled. I am using a 7 foot surf rod with a penn clash 2500 so I have small gear. In my head I’m thinking I hooked this shark because I am getting overpowered quick. I’ve caught big stuff on light gear and I’ve never been this overpowered before. I play with my drag because I don’t want my line to snap and I’m winding if I can pull this shark in. Well eventually my line loosens up and I figured I snapped off. Then I see what’s caught on the end on my hook. It has fibers hanging off, blood on it, the skin feels like sand paper. I took some photos to see what you guys think. Did I snag this shark I saw and I ripped some skin or part of a fib off? I went back out looking for it cautiously only about ankle deep haha and I threw some more chovies out. I took a picture of my bait so you could see clearly it’s not part of a chovie. At this point my bag of frozen fish had been in the sun for several hours and they were basically melting as soon as you’de touch them. This piece of “shark skin” is rough and solid. Completely different than any bait I wasn’t using. I know fishing stories get weird sometimes but this is 100% unfabricated.

Really weird and interesting. My first thought when I saw the first picture was that it looked like skin from a leopard shark, especially with the leathery feel you described.

Is it possible that a smaller shark took your bait, and then the larger leopard grabbed onto the smaller one and took off? The piece that came back is maybe a piece of the mouth/jaw of the little shark that tore off when the bigger shark wouldn't let go? I don't know...just hypothesizing.

    Cool story, though.

That’s a weird one for sure.

Fishing from the shore one time, I saw a commotion of birds going, crazy within casting distance. As I’m setting up to cast I see a sea lion joining in the fray. I had a frozen grunion on, and shortly after getting out into middle of the action, something picked it up and it felt like it had been attached to a car going down PCH. No headshakes, no turning, and an unbelievable rate of line peel with the drag singing. As I tightened up the drag I got the hook back and that was all. The birds soon disbursed and I never saw the sea lion again. Left me thinking it had to be that dog that picked up my bait, but I didn’t get any fur back on my hook.
    Just saying, maybe...?
