    Hey everyone,

I've been fly fishing spotted bay bass for a while now, but I am pretty new to freshwater bass fly fishing. I started fishing Barrett this year and have had a ton of fun with that, but now that it's closed, I went to Lower Otay without much luck. But, I'm dying to catch some fish there with my dad on Saturday at either Lower Otay or El Cap. Any preference on which of those two lakes for a tube in early November?

Also, does anyone have advice for types of fly, retrieve, and depth this time of year? I know the water temp has dropped a lot since summer, and I'm wondering what I should be focused on for catching bass now. Is fishing poppers in the morning still a thing in the late fall at Lower Otay or El Cap?

Otherwise, would clousers shallow or craw/wooly bugger imitations deep be good ideas? I'm still learning the effects of seasons on freshwater bass, and its really interesting, but I have a lot to learn.

I might bring a baitcaster too. Would spinnerbaits or dropshot work this time of year? I've fished them in the bays for years, and they're confidence baits for me.

Thanks for the help. I'm really glad I got into freshwater bass, they are a blast!

    Zack

Thanks for the info. Are the bass pretty deep this time of year?

You would have to ask the Otay guys. I've only been there twice. I think it a fairly shallow lake as So Cal lakes go.

All fish will be relatively shallow until turnover and the lake water is the same temperature top to bottom. Then they will be as deep as they want to go. Still a month or so away at least for that to happen.

Thanks for that info. I struck out, but most of the time I was fishing 20-30ft, so it doesn't surprise me I didn't get any strikes. What are your favorite couple of techniques for bass this time of year? I slow rolled a spinnerbait for a while, too, but no strikes. Wondering if I should have been throwing something else like a jig or dropshot?

3-4” bass/bluegill pattern suspending jerkbaits around shallow dying weed beds.

Try throwing a balanced leach hung off a indicator 3 to 5’ near the tullies. Slow drift along edges and you should get slammed. This has worked for me at our local lakes.

Yeah, I like that idea. Looks like I'll be picking up some balanced leeches tomorrow. That sounds like it would work well for LMB. Thanks Doolan!
