Had to leave town Friday morning but wanted to get one more solid crack at the bait barge while it was still hot. Headed out at around 11pm and got on the water at midnight. A quick paddle to the barge (an advantage to using a touring ocean kayak vs. a fishing kayak is the enhanced speed) and I was fishing. The first few hours were slow; I caught a new PB at around 20” on the tape early on but aside from that it was slow going. Not much current moving at all and even the dogs were listless and asleep. I worked around the numerous channels until I decided to hit one more spot at 4am before going. I’m glad I did, because the current started to rip and it was lights out for the last hour of fishing. Ended up with 4 fish over 18” (two of them being over 20”), countless smaller fish, and one something that busted me off on 30lb braid/40lb mono before I even had time to react. Plenty of small calicos and a good sized spottie as well. Got off the water at 5:30am and got home by 6. A couple hours of sleep, class at 9, and then hit the road! I was a zombie for the rest of the day but it was completely worth it. Never give up on slow days until the fat lady sings; if I had called it an hour sooner it would have been a relatively disappointing night. Tight lines!

What about 10” spotties dropped and rolled around in the sand? I also have lots of pics of gut hooked 8” MB jetty calicoes and pacific mackerel caught on expensive setups.

Question here, aren't you supposed to tie mono that is of a less diameter to braid, so for example if its 30 lb braid, you would tie 30 or less mono? Just curious for my own education.

Bass fishing I’m using 65lb to 40lb... all I gotta say is that I’ve caught more fish on that then anything else where 5lb bass are just ‘okay’.

Depends. If you are fishing crazy structure then some use a heavier leader then the mainline. In Florida thats how they do it when fishing bridges and docks.

I mean mono that’s a smaller diameter than 30lb braid is way too light.

The braid broke. He might have just dove into the structure past the topshot before I had time to react.

That would have been my guess. Braid failure has cost me a few fish lately. Only takes a very small nick.

WTG Kam, nice sandies.... What are you night time kayak guys using for lights besides a headlamp?

Most guys use some kind of kayak light but I just use a couple of small bike safety lights for much, much cheaper. Hobie products in particular are super expensive new. I should get an additional light in the near future though; just a challenge with my yak bc it isn’t designed to have stuff mounted on it

Hey man.. Toss a bright, small LED or CREE light from Amazon into a wide necked bottle with just a splash of white spray paint on the inside, dangle it from a pole above and behind you. Bigger bottles will be more diffuse, smaller ones will be brighter. Add a piece of plastic mirror glued into the lid of you want it even brighter yet...
