Fished the slack tide this afternoon, had a few bites at the SD river channel yesterday so I thought I’d try again. Using the dropshot with chartreuse gulp mullet I was able to get some bites and finally landed this baby halibut. Good fight, but then a few casts later I hooked a legal, I think. It’s a light bite and unlike bass who run right away these Hali’s just bite and chilled...I would tug a little after the “bite” and if I felt weight I would set the hook...what an amazing feeling that is!!! The second one bit right at the weed line, ambush predator...it then got into the grass but I could tell something was there but it wouldn’t budge, my drag was set well and I gained a little but not much until it after maybe 30 seconds it started coming up. I thought it was a damn eel, I was only seeing it’s side profile! Got it close and then it figured out what was happening. Started thrashing and I had no good rocks to get it into...it messed up all the leader and took off fast I didn’t even see it swim away! Very cool, pretty sure it was legal but would you want to keep anything from the SD river inlet? Finally busted my skunk, I’ll be hunting Hali’s from now on til the spotty bite comes back.

Edit* also look at the side of the baby hali, it was bit by something I believe!

Good things happen when your bait matches your rod ;)

Not to mention the backpack, and you didn't see em, but the shoes too haha. I love neon green or as the fishing world sees it, chartreuse.

What rod is that? Glad to see your slx is still holding up in the salt.

The rod is from Amazon! It’s from a company called enigma fishing and it was holding up against a tuna last time I went offshore. It’s solid. The slx gets cleaned at squidco every 6 months, it’s a great reel.

The Day-Glo Company that makes all the fluorescent pigments actually makes a fluorescent green (Signal Green) as well as a fluorescent yellow, or chartreuse, they call Saturn Yellow .

Nice work. I feel like the river estuary area has been down since they started the ingram Street Bridge construction. Last year I had some good double digit spotty days down there, it just hasn't been popping like that for me.

Went back today and tried to make a video, got one small spotty and one small halibut. I will say, the hali bite was so cool I had a shrimp gulp lure on dropshot and was just bouncing it off the bottom about 15 ft from me to see what the action was like when bam it got hit and disappeared...I set the hook and it was a baby hali! Very fun watching my lure disappear.
