Left the dock at 7am in Freedom Boat Club boat Just for the Halibut in search of Halibut. Got a nice scoop of sardines and started the search. Got a couple of shorts pretty quick but all in all it was a very slow day with 3 short halibut, one nice sculpin, and big grumpy bay bass. The highlight of the day was captured in the video below, thought we finally tied in to the hali we were looking for. Also not sure what species it is so if you can identify please let me know.

Tail looks like a blue? I'm certainly no expert though...

Bet you thought you had a barn door of a hali til you saw color!

Awesome catch! Also good job on bringing in a pretty sizable shark on halibut-sized gear!

We totally thought it was a big hali because for something that big it came up relatively easy on what was essentially bass gear.

It looks like it's either a six gill or a small brown thresher. The browns are rare and not very good table gate, unlike it's green Brother.

That's not good table fare. Not "gate".

What is the difference between 6 and 7 gill... besides the obvious? They look pretty much the same. I agree, that shark is likely one of them.

Besides the obvious, sixgills are only in extremely deep water. Sevengills come close to shore and in the bays on occasion. Also looks like sixgills do not have spots / splotches, whereas sevengills often do.

From Val Kells' book (highly recommended):

7gill for sure. Caught plenty enough to be able to recognize them right away. As a matter of fact, my avatar is of one (PB at 98.5") that I caught.
