Was up visiting some family that live pretty much on the water so I decided my brother and I should each bring a rod. I c-rigged a gulp sandworm with a size six hook on both of our rods.
I walked down to the water in search of surf perch. About 30 mins in I caught my first one ever. IMG_20190103_163125.jpg A small one. moments later my brother hooked into something HUGE. Both of us were extremely excited to find out what it was. After a 2 minute long adrenaline inducing fight my brother reeled in something I never thought I would see caught from a socal beach. A 24 inch striper!!!!! IMG_20190103_165004.jpg IMG_20190103_173356.jpg A striper on the sandworm. It weighed alot. Approximately 10 lbs? Soon after I caught another small surfperch and we had to head out.. Absolutely awesome catch and fun time with the family.

So could you show me where on this map of Oceanside you were fishing? I'd really like to catch a fat stripped bass. Screen Shot 2019-01-03 at 9.44.39 PM.png

Saw the title and knew before I even looked at your post. Awesome. Can someone tell me how the saltwater ones taste compared to the lake ones. Only ever caught dinks at Lake Mead but remember them being pretty tasty.

My brothers gonna cook it up for dinner tonight. My dad, having surf fished for them on Long island NY most of his life swears they are amazing. I'll tell you how it tasted later.

I’ve been wondering the same thing Galen. My uncle has a 72’ houseboat kept at Antelope pt. Marina and he invites me to go along with my cousins, friends etc every September. Striper fishing is off the hook, and maybe stupid good for 3-8 lb stripers. Dropping Kroc spoons 80 - 120 ft and then jerk / speed reeling. 60 ft is the magic depth your spoon gets whacked for the bigger guys. Top water stripers average 1-3 lbs as they can stay in the warm water collumn much longer than the big guys. ( it’s an oxygen thing ). Anyway, we eat many stripers on the trip, and fish tacos are on the list 3 nights of the week, along with leftovers for 13 people. Fresh water stripers are good white meat, minus the blood vein, but they can’t compare to fresh caught Walley in the eats department ( Powell has a good Walleye population and we eat those separately when we catch one ). I’ve always wondered how salt and freshwater stripers compare. I have a feeling the salt version would be much more firm. Just a hunch....

I have caught many stripers on the Colorado also, what a blast. Chum and they will come.
Fish tacos galore. It would be interesting to taste the difference between fresh and salt.

Oh Lord, it was delicious. 20190104_200249.jpg We seasoned the fillets with butter, garlic powder, Cajun seasoning, onion powder, and lemon. Baked it 450 Fahrenheit for about 10 mins. It was killer.
